Star Topology: Definition, Functions, Features, Characteristics, How It Works, Strengths, Weaknesses and Its Implementation
For a complete discussion of what star topology is, see the description below.
Understanding Star Topology
Star topology or also called star topology is a network topology in the form of convergence from the middle node to each node or user. In the star topology, the use of costs can be said to be medium.
In the star topology, each computer is connected using a device called a Hub/Switch. The hub in this topology functions to receive and forward signals sent from one computer to another. The transmission medium used in the star topology is UTP cable which is equipped with an RJ 45 connector.
Star Topology Function
The function of the star topology is as a liaison between one computer and another computer in a computer network, both the computer as a server or as a client. Apart from that, it can also be used to connect between computers on a network in a star topology to connect other network component hardware, such as routers, access points, modems and other.
Star Topology Features
The characteristics of the star topology are the presence of a hub or switch that connects each server and client computer.
Characteristics of Star Topology
The characteristics of the star topology are as follows:
- Each node communicates directly with the central node. Data traffic follows the flow from the node to the central node and back again
- It is easy to develop because each node only has a cable that is directly connected to the central node.
- If there is damage to one of the nodes, only that node is disturbed, while the others are not disturbed.
- You can use lower cables because they only handle one node traffic and often use UTP cables.
- The cable type used is UPT type and RJ 45 connector
- If each data packet that enters the hub is then spread to all connected nodes very much, the network performance will be weak/decreased.
How the Star Topology Works
The workings of the star topology are as follows:
- The hub that has been connected to the data packet provider server must be ready to become the center of a computer network.
- Then, attach the cables in the port on the hub or switch that is used as a hub.
- If each cable has been installed, connect the cables to the computers that are used as clients or users.
- In that way, each user or client will get the same data as what is owned by the server as the center and also the source of data packets. If you use a star topology in making a computer network, you must make each computer used as a user and require each computer with one cable installation. Therefore, if you have 50 client or user computer units, you need 50 cable units so that a star topology network can run properly and optimally on each user's computer. The use of star topology is not only conventional, but there is the term hybrid star topology. Basically, this topology is the same as the general star topology. But what distinguishes it is the use of the cable which often uses several types of cables in a computer network. The use of several types of cables is more towards the quality of data transfer that can be carried out by servers and hubs or switches to users. The better the quality and type of cable used in the star topology, the better the quality of signal transfer and data packets in the computer network.
Advantages of Star Topology
The advantages of the star topology are as follows:
Can Be Used On Many Server And Client Computers
By using a star topology, it is possible to handle a large number of server and client computers. For the use of computers in one room which can reach 30-50 units, data access between computers in the room can still be handled by this star topology network.
Very Light In Maintanance
In a star maintenance topology it's easier or lighter, what you have to do is look at the condition of the server computer, the hub or switch and also the cable that connects the hub to the computer. If one of the user's computers is damaged on the network, then it is enough to look at the condition of the damaged cable, you don't have to look at all the cables one by one. This makes maintenance even lighter.
Transfer Speed on the same computer network
Using a star topology on a computer network, each connected server or user computer will get the same speed and data transfer. So that it can increase the efficiency of the use of the network.
Can Use Various Types of Cables
By using a star topology, this topology really supports a variety of different cable types in a computer network.
Easy In Development
Computer networks that use the star topology are easy to develop. If you want to increase the number of user and client computers, then you only need to buy a cable, and you can connect directly to a hub or switch that is used as a central data transmission in the network which are made. Without the need for re-cable installation which can take a long time.
High Level of Network Security
The level of security in the star topology is quite high, this is because the star topology is difficult tampered with or breached by irresponsible parties, because it already has a level of security tall.
Ease of Network Operations
The use and application of the star topology when forming a computer network is very easy, so many choose to use the star topology in building a computer network.
Disadvantages of Star Topology
The disadvantages of the star topology are as follows:
Lots of Cable Required
The use of a lot of cables in a star topology is one of the disadvantages of this type of topology. Because to realize this star topology requires a lot of cables, because one cable is used for one user or client computer.
Hub or Switch Needs Maintenance
Hubs or switches in a star topology are hardware that has the main function. Therefore it is necessary to take good care of this tool, if there is damage to the hub component it will cause the connection and data transfer in all networks to be disrupted and damage.
Heavy Traffic Can Lower Data Transfer Speeds
In a star topology, if the traffic is very heavy, it can reduce the data transfer speed and can reduce the quality of the computer network.
Higher Network Building Costs
With so many materials that must be used to build a star topology, it can be expected that the costs used will be higher than other types of topologies. The number of cables used and this hub can make the cost more expensive or higher.
Star Topology Implementation
Star topology is a type of topology that is widely applied to computer networks in general, because it can reduce maintenance costs. The use of this topology is usually on a computer network consisting of 20-30 computers and its implementation is usually in locations:
- School
- Office
- Cafe
- Institution
- And others
