Mollusca: Definition, Characteristics, System, Classification and Examples - On this occasion About Knowledge will discuss about Mollusca. Which in this discussion explains the meaning of molluscs, their characteristics, systems, clarifications and examples briefly and clearly. For more details, see the following article.

Mollusca: Definition, Characteristics, System, Classification and Examples

Mollusca is the second largest phylum of the animal kingdom (Animalia) after the Arthropoda phylum. It is estimated that there are 75 thousand species, with an additional 35 thousand species in fossil form.

Molluscs live in seawater, fresh water, brackish and some are on land. Mollusca omo omo habitat is located in the trenches of the ocean continent to high mountains. It can even be found easily around our house. Molluscs are studied in a branch of zoology called malacology.

Definition of Mollusca

Molluscs are a group of animals that have triploblastic stomata and soft-bodied and multicellular invertebrates. The word Mollusca comes from the Greek word molluscus which means soft. Molluscs are included in one of the soft animals, whether with a shell or without a shell. Such as various types of shellfish, snails, chitons, squid and also their relatives.

Mollusca characteristics

The following are the characteristics of molluscs, including:

  • Have a variety of sizes and body shapes.
  • It is soft and not segmented.
  • It is one of the coelomate triploblastic.
  • Is one of the invertebrate animals (does not have a backbone).
  • Live in water as well as on land.
  • Mollusca body consists of legs, visceral mass and also minerals.
  • Is a hermaphrodite animal that has 2 sexes (male and female) in one body.
  • It has a requisite ring which is the nervous system.
  • The excretory organs are nephridia.
  • Has a radula (toothed tongue).
  • Heterotrophic animals.
  • reproduce sexually.
  • Molluscs have a body structure that is bilateral symmetry.

Mollusca Organ System

The following are the mollusc organ systems, including:

  • Mollusca Circulatory System

Mollusca circulatory system is an open circulatory system, except in the cephalopod class. The meaning of an open circulatory system is that blood flows from open cavities in the body and there are no main arteries or veins that can increase blood pressure.

So that the blood pressure is slow and the organs are flooded with blood. The circulatory system consists of the heart and blood vessels, where the heart consists of one or two atria and one ventricle.

  • Mollusca Digestive System

The mollusc digestive system includes the mouth, esophagus, stomach, intestines and anus. In certain types of Molluscs, there are organs in the mouth such as jaws and a jagged tongue that can move back and forth.

  • Mollusca Nervous System

The mollusc nervous system consists of a ring of nerves that surrounds the esophagus and other nerve fibers radiating from the ring to innervate various organs.

  • Mollusca Excretory System

The Mollusca excretory system is in the form of Nephridia which have a role similar to the kidneys, these Nephridia excrete the metabolic waste in liquid form.

  • Mollusc Respiratory System

Respiratory systems in Molluscs are different. When animals live in water, they breathe using gills. Meanwhile, those that live on land pass through the lungs, but can occur by exchanging air in the mantle. This system functions like the lungs.

Mollusca Definition of Characteristics of the Classification System and Examples

Classification of Molluscs

The classification of molluscs, among others, namely:

  • Amphineura

Amphineura is a type of Mollusca that is still primitive. Amphineura itself has a bilateral symmetrical body and has several gills in its mantle cavity. Living around the coast, for example: Chiton.

  • Scaphopods

Scaphopods are animals that live in the sea or on the beach. Scaphopods have sharp shells, are shaped like trumpets, have small legs, have several tentacles on their heads and have no gills. An example is: Dentalium Vulgare.

  • Gastropods

Gastropods are animals that use their stomachs as legs. These gastropods live on land, fresh water or at sea. Gastropods usually have a shell on their bodies. Examples like: Snail.

  • cephalopods

Cephalopods use their heads as locomotion. Cephalopods have an endoskeleton, exoskeleton or neither. Cephalopods have bilateral symmetry. The body consists of a head, neck and body. Examples such as: Squid

  • Pelecypoda (Bilvalvia)

Pelecypoda has an ax-shaped leg that is anterior. Bilvalvia itself is a shell animal consisting of two parts. Pelecypoda has a well-developed nervous system and brain, living in fresh and sea water. Examples include: Meleagrina (pearl clam), Anadonta (snake shell), Ostrea (oyster) and also Panope Generosa (giant clam)

Thus the explanation about Mollusca: Definition, Characteristics, System, Classification and Examples. Hopefully it can be useful and add to your insight. Thank you.
