Definition of Electric Current Strength, Formulas, Examples of Electric Current Strength Problems
Let's discuss the meaning of strong electric current first carefully.
Definition of Electric Current Strength
Electric current strength or electric current is defined as the flow of electric charge through a conductor within a certain time span. In a conductor, the flowing charge is called the free-moving electrons. The flow of electric current in a conductor is almost the same as the flow of heat in an object. Where the heat moves from an object with a higher temperature to an object with a lower temperature.
The heat flow will stop if the temperature of the two objects is balanced or the same (thermal equilibrium). So, in the flow of electric current the same thing will apply, if the two points have the same potential difference then the flow of electric charge will stop. The current moves from high potential to lower potential, from positive to negative, from anode to cathode.
The direction of the electric current is opposite the direction of the electron flow. Electric charge can move if there is a potential difference. The potential difference is obtained from a power source, for example a battery or accumulator. Each power source always has two poles, namely the positive pole (+) and the negative pole (-).
If the battery poles are connected by a continuous conductor line, to understand it better you can pay attention to the image below. We get an electric circuit that looks like the picture (a), the circuit diagram looks like in the picture (b).
In the picture above, the battery (source of potential difference) is represented by the symbol:
The long line shows the positive pole, while the short line shows the negative pole. Tools that are powered by batteries can be in the form of light bulbs, heaters, radios, and so on.
When the circuit is formed, charge can flow through the wires in the circuit, from one pole of the battery to the other. This flow of charge is also known as an electric current.
Electric Current Strong Formula
The electric current flowing in a wire is defined as the total amount of charge that passes through it per unit time at a point. Therefore electric current can be formulated by:
With the information Q, namely the amount of charge that passes through a conductor at a point during the time interval Δt. The electric current is in couloumb per second and is given a special name, namely the ampere, which was taken from the French physicist, Andre Marie Ampere (1775-1836).
One ampere is defined as one coulomb per second (1 A = 1 C/s). The smallest units often used are milliamperes (1 mA = 10-3 A) or microamperes (1µA = 10-6 A). The instrument used to measure the strength of an electric current is an ammeter (abbreviated as ammeter).
Conductors contain a lot of free electrons. That is, if a conducting wire is connected to the battery poles, it is actually the negatively charged electrons that will flow on the wire.
When the conductor wires are first connected, the potential difference between the battery terminals creates an electric field inside the wire and parallel to it.
That way, the electrons leave the negative terminal of the battery and enter the wire at the other end. There is a continuous flow of electrons through the wire that occurs when the wire is connected at both poles. In accordance with the provisions regarding positive and negative charges, it is considered as a positive charge flowing in one direction which remains equivalent to a negative charge flowing in the opposite direction.
When discussing current flowing in a circuit, what is meant is the direction of positively charged flow. The direction of the current which is identical to the direction of the positive charge is called conventional current.
Examples of Problems of Electric Current Strength
The following is an example of a matter of electric current strength.
There is an electric current of 5 A flowing through a conducting wire for 1.5 minutes. Count how much electric charge passes through a wire!
Completion:
Is known:
I = 5 A
t = 1.5 minutes = 90 seconds
Asked Q = …?
Answer:
Q= I.t
Q= (5A) (90 s)
Q = 450 C
So from the above problem it is found that the amount of electric current passing through a wire is 450 Coulombs
