Principles of Geography: Definition, Types and Explanations
Geography is the study of physical and human phenomena on earth. Many branches of geography are obtained where the scope of geography includes many fields and fields of geography.
The word geography comes from the Greek, namely geo which means Earth and graphos which means description. Currently, we know geography as a science that examines locational similarities and spatial differences in physical and human phenomena on the Earth's surface. Geography also has geographic principles that are used to explain various geographical phenomena.
Types of Geography Principles
Basically the principles of geography are divided into 4 types, namely:
Principle of Distribution (Distribution)
This principle is a principle that concerns the distribution of phenomena on the surface of the earth (geosphere) which tend to be spread unevenly.
The purpose of using this principle is to know the relationship between one phenomenon and another as a whole.
In addition, with the principle of distribution we can also predict the possibilities that will occur in the future.
An example of the distribution principle:
The distribution of flora and fauna in Indonesia is very diverse.
Population distribution in Indonesia
The distribution of coal content in Indonesia is uneven.
Principle of Interrelation
The principle of interrelation relates to the interrelationship between one symptom and another.
Such as the relationship between physical symptoms with physical symptoms, physical symptoms with social, or social symptoms with social symptoms.
The results of this interrelation can be used to describe geographic characteristics in an area.
An example of the interrelationship principle:
The drought is caused by the La Nina phenomenon.
Deforestation in the upstream area causes flooding in the downstream area.
Forest destruction causes disruption of flora and fauna ecosystems.
Principle Description
The principle of description relates to the explanation (description) of a phenomenon on the surface of the earth (geosphere) either through writing, tables, diagrams, maps or videos.
Through these data will be used to explain the characteristics of geographic symptoms, the relationship between symptoms and spatial distribution.
So that the data can be described properly, the first thing is data collection, classifying data, mapping, and describing each mapping unit.

Principles of Chorology (Spatial)
The principle of chorology relates to the study of symptoms, facts, and geographical issues in terms of distribution, interrelation, and interaction in space (the surface of the earth) that form an integrity or unity certain.
Examples of chorological principles:
When we look at the definition of the Earth, it is not only part of the earth's crust, but also includes layers the atmosphere that coats the earth, water (both on the surface and in the ground), as well as the living things that exist inside it.
