Definition of Routers
Router is hardware (hardware) that can be used to connect several networks of the same or different. The router is also interpreted as a device for sending data packets with the network or the internet to get to its destination, the process is called routing.

The function of the router is to connect two or more networks that will forward data from one network to another. The main function of the router is to share or distribute IP addresses, statically or DHCP or Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol to all computers connected to the router the.
With a unique IP address that is distributed from the router to each computer, each computer will be connected to each other and can also communicate with a LAN or internet network.
Routers can be used to connect many small networks to a larger network internetwork or dividing a large network into several subnetworks for increased performance and convenience the management.
Routers are also commonly used to connect two networks that use different media (as in a wireless router which often can connecting computers using radios, also supports connecting computers with UTP cables), or different network architectures, such as in Ethernet to Token Rings.
Routers can be used to connect a LAN to a telecommunications service such as leased line telecommunications or Digital Subscriber Line (DSL). The router that is used to connect the LAN to a leased line connection such as T1 or T3, is often called an access server.
Meanwhile, a router that is used to connect a local network to a DSL connection is called a DSL router. Such routers generally have a firewall function to perform packet filtering according to the source address and destination address of the packet, although some routers do not have it.
Routers that have packet filtering features are called packet-filtering routers. Routers generally block data traffic that is spread by broadcast so that it can prevent broadcast storms that can slow down network performance.
Types of Routers
In general, routers are divided into two types, namely:
- Static Routers (static router) is a router that has a static routing table that is set manually by the network administrator.
- Dynamic Routers (dynamic router) is a router that maintains and creates a dynamic routing table, by listening to network traffic and also by interrelating with other routers.
How Routers Work
Routers work by routing packets or data information. In this way, the router can find out which route the information will travel to, whether it is on the same or a different network.
If the intended information leads to a different network, then the router will automatically forward it to that network, otherwise if the packet is destination is the same network, then the router will block outgoing packets and forward the packet by routing on the same network until it is sent to the goal.
