The Prophet Muhammad once explained:
"Indeed, the heart will feel calm about what is lawful and will not be calm about what is unlawful." (HR. Thabrani).
The hadith above gives direction to us that halal food will cause peace of mind and our hearts. And conversely, food that is haram or obtained in an illegal way will cause restlessness, anxiety and restlessness.
Thus, food has a very big contribution in our physical life, but it also influences our mental attitude and personality.
Scientific facts show that food has a very large influence on the body, soul, emotions, and reason. Therefore, it is appropriate if we pay great attention to this food problem.
Allah says in the Quran surah Abasa verse 24:
فَلۡیَنۡظُرِ الۡاِنۡسَانُ اِلٰی طَعَامِہٖۤ
It means:
"So, humans should pay attention to their food." (QS. Abasa verse 24).
Main Prayer Before Meal
The shortest and most authentic prayer before eating is reading the basmalah. Namely reading "Bismillah"
This prayer comes from the words of the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam:
إِذَا أَكَلَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَذْكُرِ اسْمَ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى فَإِنْ نَسِىَ أَنْ يَذْكُرَ اسْمَ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى فِى أَوَّلِهِ فَلْيَقُلْ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ أَوَّلَهُ وَآخِرَهُ
When one of you eats, let him mention the name of Allah Ta'ala. And if he forgets to mention His name at the beginning, let him read, "Bismillahi awwaluhu wa Akhirahu" (by mentioning Allah's name at the beginning and end of the meal). (HR. Tirmidhi, he said the hadith is hasan sahih)
The virtue of prayer before eating is that Satan will stay away and not eat with him. So the benefits, the food becomes more blessed both for worship and for other positive activities.
By reciting this basmalah, we will avoid interference and the participation of Satan in our eating process, as explained in a hadith.
"And, when he did not mention the name of Allah at his meal, Satan said, "You get a place to stay and have dinner." (Narrated by Ahmad, Muslim, Abu Dawud, and Ibn Majah).
Satan actually eats with us in the food we eat, as explained in the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad.
“Surely the devil can eat if the name of Allah is not mentioned. to him (the food). "(HR. AHmad, Muslim, Abu Dawud and Nasa'i).

In fact, the heart is built by what is eaten. If the nutrients that enter the body form our hearts clean and illuminated by divine light, then our hearts will also be clean and shining.
On the other hand, if the food substances that enter our bodies and make up our hearts are dirty and diseased, then our hearts are also dirty, diseased, and dark.
This is the importance of reciting bismillaah while eating. Besides preventing the devil from being able to eat, it is also to produce the blessings of the food we eat.
Prayer Before Eating Most Known
Another prayer before eating that is more popular in society comes from the hadith narrated by Malik and Ibn Syaibah. Namely a prayer that reads:
اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيمَا رَزَقْتَنَا وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ
(Alloohumma baariklanaa fiimaa rozaqtanaa wa qinaa 'adzaaban naar)
Meaning: O Allah, bless us in what You have provided for us and save us from the torment of hell
In the history of Ibn Sunni, as stated by Imam Nawawi in Al Adzkar, there is an additional bismillah so that it becomes:
اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيمَا رَزَقْتَنَا وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ
(Alloohumma baariklanaa fiimaa rozaqtanaa wa qinaa 'adzaaban naar. Bismillah)
Meaning: O Allah, bless us in what You have provided for us and save us from the torment of hell. In the name of Allah.
With this prayer, we ask for the blessings of the food we eat. Ask for blessings in what Allah has provided. Also ask for protection from the torments of hell, because how many people go to hell because of their mouths. Both because of what he eats and because of what he says.
Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala teaches prayers so that we are always connected to Him. Always depend on Him and also always hope in Him. And every prayer will be granted. "I grant the request of the person who prays when he asks Me," said Allah in Surah Al Baqarah verse 186.
Allah likes his servants who pray a lot. Therefore He taught prayers for every activity and every opportunity. Precisely when a servant does not want to pray, actually it is a form of real arrogance that will end in hell.
And your Lord said: “Pray to Me, I will surely accept it for you. Indeed, those who are proud of worshiping Me will enter the Hellfire of Hell in a state of humiliation” (QS. Al Mu'min: 60)
