Review of Unagi Model One, Fast and Stylish Electric Scooter

Unagi means “eel” in Japanese and is a fitting name for the company that makes one of the most stylish electric scooters out there. Not only does the Unagi Model One glide through the crowd, it's also strong and looks great.

Pricing and Availability
Unagi makes only one scooter, the Model One, available in two configurations. E250 with a single motor (Rp. 12 million) and E500 with two motors (Rp. 14 million). Both are available in blue, red, white and black, but the company is also offering premium and special colors and designs for the E500 for an additional Rp. 4.5 million.
If you drop Rp. 15 million on a scooter is too expensive, you can also rent an E500 for Rp. 750 thousands/month including shipping and maintenance.
Unagi Model One designs
The Unagi Model One is one of the coolest scooters I've ever ridden. The front steering tube gracefully tapers from the bottom to the handlebars, changing from a round to a triangular shape. Minimal fuss for a deck with clean, minimalist lines. The top of the deck was covered in slippery rubber. My feet never slip.
I also love the hinge mechanism on the steering tube, one of the smartest designs I've seen on a scooter. Fold down the tube by pulling on the two tabs on the base. In the folded position, the front wheel also locks into place. D
Where other scooters require handlebars to be tethered to the rear fender, the Unagi's handlebars float above. Unagi is controlled using two thumb paddles. The paddle on the right handlebar is for acceleration and the paddle on the left is for braking. Above each paddle is a small button.
The mode on the right lets you switch between the three riding modes (limiting top speed). The left button honks a loud, high-pitched scooter horn. It's as if Unagi stole the siren from the smoke detector.
Among these is a large, bright LCD panel that displays speed, distance covered, and estimated remaining battery life. You can switch between three riding modes which limit the top speed of the scooter.
Two LEDs on the front clearly show what's ahead when riding in the dark. Not as bright as Glion, but effective. The Unagi also has a large red taillight that comes on but flashes when the brakes are applied.
The only real criticism I have of the Unagi's design is that the handlebar itself doesn't fold up.
Unagi Model One performance
With dual 250 watt motors, the Unagi Model One provides plenty of power. It is most clearly visible on a hill near my house. Where other scooters slowed down to around 5-6 mph, the Unagi roared at about 12 mph. It's limited to 15 mph, but you can feel ready to go even faster.
Unagi uses rubber rather than inflatable wheels on scooters, but has slots around the circumference, not a solid chunk, theoretically providing a smoother ride without the risk flat.
Traveling on the Unagi's 7.5-inch tires is definitely smoother than the Glion Dolly (which also has rubber wheels), but it's not quite as comfortable as the Levy on its larger 8.5-inch inflatables.
Another cool feature of the Levy scooter that the Unagi doesn't have is cruise control. On the Levy, I like being able to set the speed and not have to rest on the accelerator.
Battery Life
The Unagi advertises a 15.5-mile range for the Model One, but like all electric scooters, this figure is based on the most optimistic. On my trips up and down hills on both bikes, I was able to get about 10 miles out of the Model One's battery.

With a price of almost Rp. 15 million, the Unagi Model One is not cheap, but it is the best electric scooter for those who need to climb very steep hills. It has a powerful motor, a bright and clear appearance, and a great sense of style.
