For more details, please refer to the following description.
Definition and Examples of Imperative Sentences
Imperatives is a verb (verb) that is used to give commands, warnings, advice, instructions or instructions as well as requests. The following is the use of the imperative in English sentences.
Imperative Sentences
imperative sentences, which in Indonesian means command sentence. is a sentence form that is used to give commands, warnings, instructions, advice, and requests.
A common feature of written imperative sentences is that they end in the form of an exclamation mark “!”, or contain the word “please”. However, the imperative sentence may also contain neither. Basically, the imperative sentence will not be found in the subject of the sentence, because the subject "you" as the recipient of the order is already implied in it.
Consider the following rules for constructing imperative sentences.
The rules in the imperative sentence structure |
Example sentences (example of sentences) |
Using the bare infinitive as the verb | Be careful! (Be careful!)
Wake up! (Get up!) |
No subject required | Get out! (Get out!)
Just take it |
Using "do not" or "don't" in the negative imperative sentence (prohibition) | Don't forget! (Do not forget!)
Don't stop |
Using "let us" or "let's" as an invitation "Let us try it now." (Let's try now) | Let's eat! (Let us eat!) |
Adding "please" to soften the order / to be more polite | Please swipe your card. Sit down, please |
Use question tags to refine commands | Tell me everything, will you? (Tell me everything, will ya?)
Take me there, won't you? (Take me there, will you?) |
Imperative sentences usually use exclamatory marks or exclamatory marks, maybe a little similar to exclamatory sentences, aka exclamatory sentences. The difference is that not all exclamatory sentences contain orders. The exclamation point (!) in the imperative sentence indicates the emphasis on the command.
There are also imperative sentences that contain question tags similar to interrogative sentences that require a "yes" or "no" answer. The difference is that in an interrogative sentence there is no command.
Even if it ends in a dot "." or a full stop does not mean that the imperative sentence is the same as the declarative sentence or a statement sentence. This is because a declarative sentence only contains a statement or statement and does not contain an order.
Imperative sentence according to its function
The following is an example of an Imperative sentence according to its function, namely:
Share a request or wish
- Have a safe trip! (Have a safe trip!)
- Eat more vegetables! (Eat more vegetables!)
- Have a nice dream! (Sweet dreams!)
Share an Invitation
- “Come with me!” (Come on follow me!)
- “Please join us for lunch”
- "Let's go home together!" (Let's go home together)
Share a request or command & prohibition
- "Please don't touch the baby"
- “Go find a new girl!” (Find a new girlfriend!)
- "Close your eyes"
- "Stop talking!" (Stop talking!)
Give instructions (give instructions)
- “Avoid contact with skin and eyes”
- “In case of eye contact, hold eyelid open and flush with waters”
- “Call physician immediately” (Immediately call a doctor)
Compose Imperative Sentences
In compiling the imperative sentence is slightly different from other types of sentences. Because in command sentences usually do not include a subject and immediately begins with a verb (verb). This is because automatically, the imperative sentence is addressed to the person being spoken to (the second person "you").
Therefore, mentioning the subject in an imperative sentence is not necessary. Except for asserting who the command is being given to, which functions more like a call.
Consider the following examples:
- Elsa, open the door!
- you, don't eat too much.
- everybody, please stand up.
If the underlined subject is omitted, it will not change the meaning of the imperative sentence.
- Elsa, open the door!
- you, don't eat too much.
- everybody, please stand up.
So, to compose an imperative sentence or a command sentence, use a verb in the form of an imperative or imperative verb. Imperative verbs come from verbs in general that can contain commands.
Non-imperative verbs |
Imperative verbs |
“I drink a glass of water”
(I drink a glass of water) |
“Drinks a glass of water!”
(Drink (lah) a glass of water!) |
“Ella washed the dishes”
(Ella washes the dishes) |
“Ella, wash the dishes!”
(Ella, do the dishes!) |
For imperative sentences in the form of negative or prohibitions, we can use "Don't" (Don't) at the beginning of the sentence or "Stop".
- Don't give up
- Don't worry
- Don't eat my cake! (Don't eat my cake!)
- Don't stop
- Stop talking! (Stop talking!)
- Stop worrying! (Stop worrying!)
- Stop eating my cake! (Stop eating my cake!)
Thus a brief explanation about Definition and Examples of Imperative Sentences. Hopefully it can be useful and add knowledge to all of us. Have a good study.
