History of Indonesian Language & Its Development in Brief – As Indonesian citizens, we must know the ins and outs of the birth of the Indonesian language or its history. Indonesian, which is used as the national language, has quite a unique history. Even though in our country there are various kinds of languages, it is Indonesian that can unite us. Because Indonesian is the national language of Indonesia.

History of Indonesian Language and Its Development
At its inception, this Indonesian language came from the Malay language, which was then officially made as the national language of the State of Indonesia, because Malay is easily accepted by the public Indonesia. Indonesian was inaugurated as the state language the day after the Proclamation of Independence of the Republic Indonesia namely on August 18, 1945 and simultaneously with the enactment of the constitution in Indonesia.
By linguistics, this Indonesian language is one of the varieties of the Malay language. The basis used is the Riau Malay language from the 19th century. This Malay language has spread to various corners of the archipelago along with the spread of Islam in the archipelago. In ancient times, Malay Indonesian was used as the language of trade. Both land and sea routes, as a language between tribes, between religions, between islands and between kingdoms used by kings in their palaces.
The growth and development of the Malay language can be seen clearly from various inscriptions, such as: the Kedukan Bukit inscription in Palembang in 683; the Talang Tuo inscription in Palembang in 684; the Kota Kapur inscription in West Bangka in 686; the Karang Brahi Bangko inscription in Merang Jambi in 688; and the inscription on the tombstone at Minye Tujoh Aceh in 1380.
With the existence of various developmental processes, the language has changed in its use because used as a working language in the colonial administrative environment and various standardization processes other. So that the naming of the Indonesian language began to be proclaimed at the time of the Youth Pledge on October 28, 1928. The use of Enhanced Indonesian Spelling (EYD) was inaugurated by President Soeharto on August 16, 1972.
Driving Factor
The factors that caused the Malay language to be chosen as a source or variety of Indonesian are:
- Malay was the lingua franca at that time, namely the intermediary or liaison language used throughout Southeast Asia in various state associations and activities.
- Malay has a language system that is quite easy to learn and simple. So that it can be used by various tribes in various parts of this country.
- Various tribes in the country of Indonesia, both Javanese, Sundanese, Bedouin, Batak, Lampung, and Betawi other tribes accept Malay to become Indonesian as the language of unity and language national.
- Malay language has the ability to be used as a cultural language which includes a very broad meaning.
The history of the development of Indonesian language and literature has been heavily influenced by Minangkabau writers such as: Hamka, Marah Rusli, Abdul Muis, Sutan Takdir Alisyahbana, Nur Sutan Iskandar, Roestam Effendi and Chairil Anwar. These writers have provided many additions to the vocabulary, syntax, and morphology of the Indonesian language.
So in conclusion, the Indonesian language was first recognized for its existence on October 28, 1928, namely when the Youth Pledge was proclaimed. However, Indonesian officially became the unified language of the Republic of Indonesia on August 18, 1945.
