Athletics Is: Definition, History, and Sports
Athletics is a sport that consists of various combinations of physical sports, such as running, throwing, jumping and walking. Another opinion says that athletics is a type of physical sport that uses a track and field; such as walking, running, high jump and javelin throwing. In other words, athletics refers to any kind of physical exercise, exercise or game.
Etymologically, the term "Athletics" comes from the Greek, that is, from the word Athlon which means race or contest. Referring to the word athletics, the notion of athletics is a competition in certain sports which includes walking, running, jumping and throwing.
According to the Indonesian Encyclopedia that the meaning of athletics is in accordance with what has been explained above which means competition and sports in athletics, whereas in terms of athletics terminology is a form of human activity in everyday life which is contested in the form of throwing, running and jump.

A Brief History of Athletics

In the early 1930s, the Indonesian State began to recognize athletics, which was when the Dutch East Indies government began teaching athletics lessons in schools. The first athletics organization in Indonesia at that time was named Nederlands Indische Athletiek Unie which was in charge of holding athletic sports competitions.
At that time athletics sports education activities in Indonesia had been in a vacuum due to the freeze during the Japanese colonial period. However, in 1946 an organization called the Association of Sports of the Republic of Indonesia was formed with the aim of being able to revive athletic sports activities in Indonesia.

Speed Running Sports
Brisk walking is a walking motion in which one step forward continuously without stopping on an area of land. When performing fast walking movements, the position of one of the athlete's feet must always touch the ground where the footrest position must be straight.
Running Athletics Branch
Running is a fast forward movement where under certain conditions the feet are in the air and do not touch the ground. Running requires muscle strength, speed, and body coordination with strong stamina in order to reach the finish line.
This athletics branch can be further divided, including:
- short distance running; is a run with mileage and distance running numbers for short, namely 100 meters, 200 meters and 400 meters. In general, in running short distances using a squat start, the difference is only in the distance traveled.
- long distance running; is a long-distance running which is usually called a marathon, where the distance for long-distance running is 3 kilometers, 5 kilometers, 10 kilometers, and above 10 kilometers. In this long-distance race, a standing start is used where the technique is the same as the other running numbers.
- relay race; is a running sport that is carried out by carrying a stick of a certain size which the stick is handed over to the next runner in the substitution area. namely the number 4 x 100 meters, and the number 4 x 400 meters.
- Hurdles; is a running sport that is done quickly with the aim of covering a certain distance by passing several obstacles in the form of a goal or low bar.
Throwing Athletics
In sports there are also several types of throwing sports where each uses a special tool that is thrown as far forward as possible. There are several types of throwing sports, including the following:
- Javelin; is an athletic sport which is carried out by throwing the javelin as far as possible with the aim of achieving the maximum distance. For men the javelin is used with a length of 2.6 m – 2.7 m with a minimum weight of 800 grams, while for women the length of the javelin used is 2.2 m - 2.3 m with a minimum weight of 600 grams.
- Discus throw; is an athletic branch that is carried out by throwing discs as far as possible. The discs used have a diameter of 220 mm and weigh 2 kg for men, while 1 kg for women.
- Shot put; namely one of the athletic sports carried out by pushing a round iron ball as far as possible. The weight of the iron ball used for men is 5 kg – 7.257 kg, while for women it is 3 kg – 4 kg.
- hammer throws; is one of the athletic sports that is carried out by swinging, rotating, and throwing hammers as far as possible. The weight of the hammer used for men is 7.26 kg with a length of 121.3 cm, while for women it is 4 kg with a length of 119.4 cm for women.
Jumping Athletics
In athletics, jumping is divided into several types. The following are athletic jumps that are often contested, including:
- Long jump; is the movement of jumping forward by lifting the leg up on the front of the body. This movement is done with the aim of being able to carry the point of weight of the body as long as possible in the air so that it can reach as far as possible.
- High jump; namely one branch of athletics which is done by jumping as high as possible in order to cross the bar with a certain height. This sport requires the strength of the abdominal muscles and leg muscles in order to achieve high jump movements.
- Pole vault; is a branch of athletics which is carried out by jumping over a bar at a certain height with the help of a long and flexible stick.
- Triple Jump: Triple jumps are also included in the athletic variety of jumping sports. Triple jumps are also called triple jumps, triple jumps or more commonly called triple jumps. The official name for the triple jump is written in the competition rule book made by PB PASI.
- The official name is Triple Jump or (Hop Step Jump). The sport consists of three movements, namely lifting or hop, step or step, and jump or jump.
