Sonnets Are: Characteristics, Functions, Examples And The Difference From Pantun

Sonnets or sonnets are a form of literature that emerged in the mid-13th century in the city of Florence, Italy. Sonnet comes from the word sonneto in Italian which is a change from the word sono which means sound. So in short, the meaning of a sonnet is a poem that sounds.

Sonnets are more classified into a literary form of poetry by writers. The form of sonnet poetry emerged in Indonesia because it was brought by Indonesian youths who studied in the Netherlands. Sonnets are liked by poets because in general they are almost the same as rhymes.

The number of lines is wide enough to pour out the heart so that it can express the various feelings of the poet. During the Balai Pustaka era, many Indonesian poets translated sonnets and eventually developed poetry in the sonnet style as well.

In Indonesia, sonnets imported from the Netherlands were introduced by Muhammad Yamin and Roestam Effendi, because of that they are both considered pioneers/Father of Indonesian Sonnets. The forms of Indonesian sonnets are no longer subject to the requirements of Italian or English sonnets, but have more freedom in terms of content and rhyme. The handle is the number of lines (fourteen lines).

Sonnets are favored by new poets, while the factors that cause sonnets to be favored by new poets include:

There is an adjustment to the form of the rhyme, namely the octav in the sonnet which is objectively almost the same as the sampiran in the rhyme. While the subjective sonnet sextet is the content of the pantun.

The 14 lines of the sonnet are enough to express the poet's feelings or thoughts. Sonnets can be used to express various feelings or outpourings of the poet's heart.

However, sometimes the number of fourteen lines is felt to be insufficient by the patrons, so several lines are often added according to the will of the author. The additional line in the Sonnet is called Cauda which means tail.

Characteristics of the Sonnet

The characteristics of the sonnet include:

  • Consists of 14 lines
  • It consists of 4 stanzas, of which 2 are quatrains and 2 are terzina
  • Two quatrains are sampiran and form a unit called octav.
  • The two adulteresses constitute the content and form a single unit of content called a sextet.
  • The sampiran section is usually a depiction of nature
  • The sextet contains outpourings or answers or conclusions rather than what is described in the octav, so it is subjective.
  • The transition from octav to sextet is called voltaic
  • The addition of lines to a sonnet is called a coda.
  • The number of syllables in each line is usually between 9-14 syllables
  • The final rhyme is a-b-b-a, a-b-b-a, c-d-c, d-c-d

Sonnet Function

At first, the function of the sonnet was as a tool to pour out the contents of the heart, but over time, the function of the sonnet has also developed a statement of longing for the motherland, as a movement for cultural progress, as an inspiration for the soul and also as an expression of feelings for religious.

Similarities and Differences between Sonnets and Pantun

The similarities between sonnets and rhymes are that they both have a sampiran or introduction and content or conclusion. While the difference between sonnets and rhymes is that sonnets are original Italian poetry, while rhymes are original Malay poetry; a sonnet stanza consists of 14 lines, while a rhyme stanza consists of 4 lines; and the sonnet rhymes freely, while the pantun rhymes a-b-a-b.

The difference between Sonnet and Pantun is:

  • Original Italian poetry sonnets, Malay original poetry pantun
  • One stanza of the Sonnet consists of 14 lines, one stanza of the Pantun consists of 4 lines
  • Free rhyming sonnets, rhymes rhyming a-b-a-b

Example Sonnet

Here are some examples of sonnets, including:

Example 1

Shepherd

(Muhammad Yamin)

Whose feelings won't turn on (a)
Seeing children singing songs (b)
Only one in the middle of the field (b)
No head uncovered (a)

This is the fate of the shepherd boy (a)
Take shelter under a shady tree (b)
Since morning left the cage (b)
Coming home at dusk when (a)

Far a little dim until (a)
I hear the sound of a chrysanthemum (a)
Singing beautiful beautiful nature (a)

O shepherd in the green sea (c)
Listening to your puput following the buffalo (c)
let me obey you (c)

Example 2

Temple

(Sanus Pane)

You hold the pounding when
Stay standing beautifully beautiful
Don't ignore any attacks
Magnificent strong unspoiled

You are news of the past
The period of Indonesia was famously advanced
Served by the noble son of the heart
Upheld by the queen

I see joy and sorrow
Alternate in heart
Remember before and time later

What is the time in advance
So this nation that I love
Any sign of a majestic return?

Example 3

Still looking for you in the middle of silence
Which I weave all day long
Still looking for you in the middle of silence
Who fondles this self

But you never found it
What I'm looking for
In the silence
In silence

I know you are real
Then come
Meet

I
Who seeks You
All the time non-stop

Example 4

I can't find anything in this hallway
Apart from being pitch dark
Nesting silence
Attacking cold

I can't find anything in this hallway
Apart from a lump of darkness
A shred of fear
A flash of cold

I passed this long hallway
No stopping
Until I find the light

I passed this long hallway
See you later
I passed this tunnel hole

Example 5

I fell and fell
In the red soil that does not sleep
The whole body was brittle
It's like the wood in the hut collapses

Should my role be completed?
Are there still a pinch of opportunities?
Can I pop
Hope from the deepest heart?

And the body is still down
And the body is still fragile
On untouched ground

But the soul does not sag
And the enthusiasm began to grow
Try to raise the body down
