ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) is a geo-political and economic organization in the region of Southeast Asian countries. ASEAN was founded in Bangkok, on August 8, 1967 based on the Bangkok Declaration by 5 countries, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines and Thailand.

ASEAN which is one of the important organizations in the Southeast Asian region whose purpose the establishment of the ASEAN organization is to increase cooperation in the economic, security, socio-cultural and other fields of cooperation between member countries ASEAN.

The background to the founding of ASEAN is due to the similarities it has with countries in Southeast Asia.

ASEAN Founding Figures

ASEAN was founded by five countries, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand in Bangkok through the Bangkok Declaration.

At that time, five foreign ministers from each country were assigned as signatories to the Bangkok Declaration.

The following are the names of figures representing their countries as the founders of ASEAN:

  • Adam Malik, representative from Indonesia.
  • Tun Abdul Razak, representative from Malaysia.
  • Sinnathamby Rajaratnam, representative from Singapore.
  • Narsisco Ramos, representative from the Philippines.
  • Thanat Khoman, representative from Thailand.

On August 8, 1967, the five foreign ministers signed the Bangkok Declaration agreement. Since then, the history of the founding of ASEAN and the opening of new prospective members began. Brunei Darussalam joined as the first member of ASEAN on January 7, 1984, that day exactly a week after commemorating its independence day. Then ASEAN again received a new member on July 28, 1995, namely Vietnam which became the seventh member.

Followed by Laos and Myanmar on July 23, 1997 entered into a new member of ASEAN. At that time Cambodia also plans to become a member of ASEAN with Laos and Myanmar. However, the plan had to be postponed temporarily due to internal Cambodian political problems. Finally, one year later, Cambodia officially became a member of ASEAN on December 16, 1998.


The Meaning of the ASEAN Coat of Arms

The ASEAN emblem and each of its symbols have a meaning or purpose for the ASEAN member countries.

The ASEAN coat of arms means:

  • Symbolizes solidarity, meaning agreement and commitment to cooperation for the prosperity of the people in ASEAN countries.
  • Symbolizes ASEAN's loyalty to regional peace and stability in Southeast Asia and the world.

The meaning of the emblem charts:

  • The upright rice stalks, numbering ten, symbolize the number of ASEAN member countries (originally there were 5 rice stalks).
  • The shadow of the rice is brown, symbolizing the strength and stability of ASEAN.
  • The circle around and the letters ASEAN are in blue, symbolizing the friendship between ASEAN member countries.
  • Yellow base color, symbolizes prosperity.

ASEAN Goals

The ASEAN organization was founded with full consideration by countries in Southeast Asia. The considerations of the countries in Southeast Asia as the background for the establishment of ASEAN, namely:

  • Has a responsibility to strengthen economic and social stability.
  • Ensuring peace and the pace of national development.
  • Ensuring stability and security from outside interference with all its manifestations.

The Bangkok Declaration on August 8, 1967 also explained the purpose or background for the founding of ASEAN.

The contents of the Bangkok Declaration contain the objectives of the establishment of ASEAN:

  • Accelerate social progress, economic growth, and cultural development in the Southeast Asia region.
  • Improving peace and stability of relations between countries in Southeast Asia.
  • Increase cooperation by actively helping each other for the sake of common interests in the economic, social, cultural, technical, scientific and administrative fields.
  • Mutual assistance in the field of training and research facilities in the educational, vocational, technical and administrative fields.
  • Cooperate more effectively to achieve greater efficiency in agricultural, industrial and commercial development. Including research in terms of international commodity trade, improvement of transportation, communication facilities, as well as improving the standard of living of the people.
  • Increase the study of issues in Southeast Asia.
  • Maintain close and fruitful cooperation with various international and regional organizations others who have the same goals and look for opportunities to promote cooperation with them.

List of ASEAN Countries

The current members of ASEAN are all countries in the Southeast Asia region, the exceptions being Timor Leste and Papua New Guinea. The following is a list of countries and their joining date:

  • Indonesia as the founding country

  • Malaysia as the founding country
  • Thailand as the founding country
  • Singapore as the founding country
  • Brunei Darussalam joined on 7 January 1984
  • Vietnam joined on 28 July 1995
