Thigh Bone: Anatomy, Parts, Functions And Attachment Muscles – What is the function of the femur in humans?, On this occasion About the knowledge.co.id will discuss it and of course other things that also cover it. Let's look at the discussion together in the article below to better understand it.

Thighbone: Anatomy, Parts, Functions and Attachment Muscles

The thigh bone or femur is the largest and also the strongest bone in the human body. The function of the femur is to connect the hip and thigh and support the body when walking.

The location of the femur is on the part of the human thigh between the hip and knee bones. The femur attaches to the hip via a ball and socket joint that moves and articulates the hip.

Thigh Bone Anatomy

The femur is composed of the head and neck proximally and the two condyles distally.

The head of the femur will form the joint at the hip. Meanwhile, other proximal parts, such as the greater trochanter and lesser trochanter, act as the attachment sites for muscles. Proximal to the posterior is the gluteal tuberosity, a rough surface where the gluteus maximus muscle attaches. Nearby is the linea aspera, which is where the biceps femoris muscle attaches.

One of the functions of the head of the femur is as a place for the production of red blood cells (erythrocytes) in the bone marrow.

At the distal end there is a condylar structure which together with the knee forms the condylar joint. There are 2 condyles, namely the medial condyle and the lateral condyle. The two are bounded by a structure called the intercondylar fossa.

Thigh Bone Section

There are 2 major parts of the femur, namely the proximal femur and the distal femur.

The location of the proximal part of the femur is near the hip bone (pelvis) and is composed of the head, neck, trochanter, major, minor and median femur. Meanwhile, the location of the distal part of the femur is in the part of the thigh where it attaches to the kneecap.

Thigh Bone Function

Apart from being known to be large and strong, the femur is also the longest bone in the human body.

Then, what are the uses of the femur that humans really need for this activity?

  •  Strongest bone

As the strongest and sturdiest bone in the human body, the function of the femur is very vital, in supporting the body. The femur also protects the stability of the human body.

Not only that, when humans are carrying heavy loads, the femur also helps so that the body is always strong enough to support its weight. This is because the femur can withstand up to 30 times the weight of the human body.

No wonder the femur is called the largest and strongest bone in the human body. Not only that, the femur is also strong enough to withstand forces of up to 800 kg to 1 ton.

That's why, the femur does not break easily. Even if the femur is broken, it's usually only things like a car accident or a fall from a great height, which can cause it. At the very least, it takes around 3-6 months, so that the femur can recover from a broken wound.

  • Articulation and leverage of the feet

Its position is "strategic", making the function of the femur very diverse. One of them is to develop the articulation and leverage of the legs, for running, walking, and even standing.

The very top of the femur, which is a kind of ball, connects to the hip joint. So, the feet can move in all directions.

  • The main bone in the foot

Not only big and strong, the femur is also the main bone of the leg, which is the foundation of all the bones in the leg.

Because, the distal (base) part of the femur, the position of attachment of all the leg bones, from the knee to the foot is very basic.

  • Site for making red blood cells

The medullary cavity, located in the femur, is a place for storing and producing red blood cells.

Inside the medullary cavity, there is bone marrow, which has 2 types of stem cells, namely hemopoietic (producing blood cells) and stromal (producing fat).

  • Place of attachment of the knee

The very base of the femur (distal), is where the patella (kneecap) attaches.

At the base of the femur, there is the lateral condyle, which allows the knee to move freely.

  • Lower Body Exercise Equipment

The femur also plays a role in helping the leg move in a straight motion and bends towards the hip, so it is like a basic part of human movement equipment.

  • Joint the knee, making the condylar joint

At the distal end of the femur is the condylus which forms the condylar joint with the knee. There are 2 condyles, namely the medial condyle and the lateral condyle.

  • Connecting the hips and knees

The femur also has a function as a link between the hip and knee bones.

  • Place of attachment of muscles and pigments

The femur is the place where the large muscles attach. There are 2 types of muscles in the femur, namely the origin and insertion muscles.

The origin muscle is a muscle that has normal movement or always when trying to contract.

The femur is the origin for several muscles such as the gastrocnemius, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, and vastus intermedius muscles.

Thigh Bone Attachment Muscles

The following are the muscles attached to the femur, including:

The femur is the origin of a number of muscles such as:

  • The vastus intermedius muscle
  • Vastus medialis muscle
  • Vastus lateralis muscle
  • Gastrocnemius muscle

The femur is the insertion of a number of muscles such as:

  • Iliopsoas muscle
  • The gluteus maximus muscle
  • The gluteus medius muscle
  • The tensor fasciae latae muscle
