Suspension is: definition, characteristics, examples and differences
Suspension Is: Definition, Characteristics, Examples and Differences with Solutions and Colloids – What is Suspension? Suspension is one of the terms that exist in the world of chemistry used to describe conditions a mixture of two or several kinds of objects or substances. For more details, let's look at the discussion below This.
Suspension Is: Definition, Characteristics, Examples and Differences with Solutions and Colloids
Suspension is a fluid mixture in which there are solid particles. In other words, suspension can also be interpreted as a heterogeneous mixture of liquids and solids which are dissolved so that they turn into a liquid. Solid particles contained in a suspension system are usually larger than 1 micrometer so that this allows for sedimentation to occur.
Suspension is a chemical name as for the state of the combination of several types of substances. Suspension can also be defined as a combination of some kind of heterogeneous substance type, or some kind of coffee substance with water.
Coffee and water are 2 substances that have different properties, in which coffee is a solid, while water is a liquid. When these two substances are mixed, the substances will appear to unite but some time later it will seem to separate again.
Definition of suspension according to Ansel:
Suspension can be defined as a preparation containing finely divided drug particles uniformly dispersed as well as in vehicles in which the drug exhibits the greatest solubility minimal. In suspension preparations there are dispersed powders or solid particles for the carrier liquid. It consists of a continuous phase and an external phase, liquid or semisolid, namely the external carrier phase.
Some suspensions can also be used directly, while others are in the form of solid mixtures so it needs to be constituted in advance with the carrier as in accordance with the previous one used.
Difference between Solutions, Colloids and Suspensions
Basically, suspensions, solutions and colloids are a combination of 2 or more types of substances. These three chemical names are the result of mixing some of the ingredients or substances that are mixed together. Although both are the result of mixing some type of substance, the three designations are different from each other. The differences include:
- Solution, have homogeneous properties that cannot be distinguished even using an ultra microscope, all of them the particles have less dimensions, namely in sugar solutions, salt solutions, 70% alcohol, clean air, and gas.
- Colloid, Microscopically it is homogeneous but heterogeneous when observed using an ultra microscope. The particles have dimensions between 1 nm and 100 nm, are two-phase, stable, and cannot be filtered except with ultra filter. Examples are soap, milk, jelly, jam, butter, and mayonnaise.
- suspension, has heterogeneous properties, in which one or all of these particles have dimensions greater than 100 nm, are two-phase, unstable, and can be filtered. Examples of suspensions are turbid river water, a mixture of water and sand, and a mixture of water and oil, and a combination of coffee and water. mud and clay suspended in water, dust suspended in air, mist is one of the water systems suspended in air, and medicinal syrups cough.
Suspension Features
- Can be seen using a microscope and can be filtered using special filter paper.
- Has a slow deposition of particles so that in the same dosage of use it can be maintained by shaking the preparation.
- Has a particle size of less than 1.0-5 cm.
- If sedimentation occurs during storage, it can be immediately redispersed when the suspension is shaken.
- Has a labile nature. This means that the suspension cannot last long and often changes.
- Easy to experience coagulation or clotting.
- Included in heterogeneous mixtures.
- The precipitate formed is not allowed to solidify on the bottom of the vessel.
- The viscosity of the suspension should also not be too high so that the preparation can be easily poured from the container.
- Gives an attractive color, taste, smell and appearance.
Suspension Uniqueness
Suspension is a preparation that contains solid drug ingredients which are in a smooth form and are insoluble and dispersed in a liquid carrier. The dispersed substance must be smooth and not easily settle. If the precipitate is agitated slowly, it must be redistributed immediately, may contain additives to ensure the stability of the suspension. One reason for preparing oral suspensions is that certain drugs are chemically unstable in dissolved form but stable in suspended form. The purpose of preparing suspension preparations is to make it easy to drink, relatively large doses can also be easier to administer, and can be easily applied to children.
In order to obtain a stable suspension preparation there must be the use of a suspending agent. The purpose of using a suspending agent is to increase the viscosity and slow down the settling process to produce a stable suspension. Evaluation of drug formulations, especially in stability tests, can be used against real-time stability tests and stability tests can be accelerated.
Suspension Stability
Several studies have also shown that suspending agents have a large impact on drug stability. However, other factors can also affect the stability of suspension preparations, including storage temperature. Because the storage temperature can affect the viscosity of the preparation and can attack substances that cannot stand high temperatures.
The stable suspension preparation itself is made by a pharmacist with various formulation designs, as has considered all aspects in determining the formulation. So that in the selection of a suspension production system that is adjusted to the type of substance made in the preparation of the suspension. In general, flocculation systems are chosen for preparing suspensions containing drugs that are unstable in the form solution, although the substance is still unable to be stabilized by using the addition of a suspending agent under conditions dissolved. Both are physically and chemically stable as well as biologically. This incident can occur in dry suspension preparations that contain antibiotics.
Suspensions with deflocculated systems are also formed based on the thoughts of pharmaceutical experts who have made considerations in several aspects. Suspension stability is longer than flocculated suspension which has a small particle size, so it is deep the preparation is not easy to precipitate, but it becomes easier to prepare deflocculated suspension preparations Good.
Physical damage to the suspension preparations can be seen by organoleptic means, while the damage to the contents needs to be analyzed instrumentally. Preparations that experience physical damage are usually considered organoleptic because there are changes in shape, change in color, change in smell and also precipitate. This instrument is generally used in detecting changes in the substances contained therein affecting the content of the drug preparation itself.
Suspension Example
Here are some examples of suspensions including:
- Mud with soil
- Clay suspended in water
