Intensive reading is a technique of reading seriously or earnestly to understand the contents of the text. Another definition according to Wikipedia, intensive reading is careful study, careful review, and the reader's detailed handling of a short reading is about two to four pages.
While the notion of intensive reading ability is an ability to understand in detail the contents of complete, accurate and critical reading of facts, concepts, opinions, ideas, experiences, feelings and the message. When reading several readers often read only one or only a few existing readings. This has the goal of growing and honing skills in reading critically.
In intensive reading is likened to techniques in reading for learning. The intensive reading skill of the readers is to understand the text, it can be lateral, critical, interpretative, or evaluative. In the cognitive aspect, the development of intensive reading techniques is for the ability to read comprehensively.

The purpose of intensive reading is to obtain information from material for discussion, besides that it can also be used as a tool in determining a subject matter or an interesting matter from a reading text so that it can or is appropriate to be used as material in discussion.
Intensive reading can also be applied as a means of selecting one or several appropriate points of thought to be used as material for discussion with friends. In addition to these methods, we can also determine material for discussion by making a conclusion from the main points of the thought and then taking the essence of the problem.

- This type of reading is the basis for learning to do better comprehension and longer retention
- Intensive reading does not use a single reading method, but uses a variety of reading techniques, namely scanning, comprehensive reading, skimming, and other techniques
- The purpose of intensive reading is to develop skills in reading in detail which emphasizes understanding words, developing vocabulary, sentences and understanding all of the contents of the text
- This activity makes students practice reading text sentences carefully and fully concentration, the existence of accuracy will find errors in structure, vocabulary and also the use of spelling or punctuation.
