Collarbone: Location, Function, Abnormalities and Attachment Muscles – On this occasion About the knowledge.co.id will discuss about the collarbone and of course about other things that also cover it. Let's look at the discussion together in the article below to better understand it.

Collarbone: Location, Function, Abnormalities and Attachment Muscles

The collarbone or clavicle is the bone that forms the shoulder and connects the upper arm to the torso. The shape of the collarbone is double-curved and elongated. The collarbone is the only bone that extends horizontally in the body.

It is located above the first rib. At its medial end, the clavicle attaches to the manubrium of the sternum (breastbone) at the sternoclavicular joint. At the lateral end it is jointed by the acromion of the scapula (scapula) with the acromioclavicularis joint.

The collarbone in women is shorter, thinner, less curved, and also smoother on the surface, while the collarbone in men is the opposite.

This collarbone is the first bone to undergo ossification during the 5th and 6th weeks of embryonic development. The clavicle is also the last bone to complete the ossification process at the age of 21.

Although this collarbone is included in the long bones, it is also the only bone that does not have one the bone marrow cavity is like any other long bone in the human body because on the inside it is made up of bones sponge.

To help the movement process in the body and its working system, every bone in the human body has muscles. This collarbone has muscles on the superior surface such as the deltoid muscle and trapezius muscle and also on the inferior surface it has the subclavius muscle.

The deltoid muscle attached to the collarbone (clavicle) has a special role, namely being able to form a round structure on the human shoulder. because it has/has a shape like the Greek alphabet delta or triangle so that these organs will be able to make free movements and freely.

Collarbone Attachment

The muscles and ligaments that attach to the clavicle or collarbone, include the following:

  • superior surface:
    • The deltoid muscle on the deltoid tubercle
    • Trapezius muscle
  • Lower surface:

The trapzoideal ligament (lateral part of the coracoclavicular ligament) is at the linea trapezoidea
The subclavius muscle in the subclavian sulcus
The conoid ligament (medial part of the coracoclavicular ligament) is at the conoid tubercle

  • Anterior border:

The pectoralis major muscle
Deltoid muscle
Sternocleidomastoid muscle
sternohyoid muscle
Trapezius muscle

Function of the Collarbone

Below are some of the functions of the clavicle or collarbone including the following:

  • As a wedge to keep the upper limbs away from the chest so that the arms can/can move freely.
  • To be able to continue the shock of the upper limbs to the body frame (axial).
Although grouped in the long bones, the clavicle or collarbone is the only bone that does not have a bone marrow cavity like other long bones. Clavicula or also collarbone is composed of spongy bone.

Abnormalities and Diseases of the Collarbone

Here are some diseases of the collarbone, including:

  • Fractured Collarbone

A collarbone fracture or clavicle fracture is a condition in which the collarbone is cracked or broken. The cause can be due to a fall with the shoulder landing first or the arm outstretched, being hit directly on the shoulder, or an accident.

Physiotherapy for broken collarbones is recommended to restore the strength and flexibility of the muscles around the broken collarbone.

  • Protruding Collarbone

The cause of protruding collarbones can occur due to physical injuries such as sprains in the upper body, cracks or fractures which are generally due to birth injuries, accidents or falls.
