8 Social Control Institutions, Types, Functions, Forms & Characteristics – We know that there are many institutions that we can meet in Indonesia. Before we discuss further, let's first look at the definition of social institutions first.

Definition of Social Institutions

In general, the notion of a social institution is a type of institution that regulates a series of procedures in carrying out human relations in living life with the aim of getting order life. From this understanding we can know the function and nature of social control institutions.

Institution of Social Control

Here there are several institutions of social control that will enforce the rules in society. In every institution there are officers who are indeed given the authority to control and supervise behavior that deviates from a person and make him aware that he acts according to social norms. Let's discuss one by one the institutions of social control.

1. Police

The police are social control institutions whose job is to maintain public order and security. The police are law enforcement officers who are tasked with enforcing social rules/norms. As law enforcers, the police are also tasked with investigating various types of social deviation cases, especially crimes and reports of disturbances to public order.

2. Court

The court is an official social control institution established by the government to deal with violations of norms/rules that exist in society. In court there are instruments in charge of running the court, among others, judges, prosecutors, clerks, and lawyers.

3. School

Schools also include social control institutions. Teachers are obliged to educate and teach students. Educating is more intensive than teaching. When educating students, the teacher will instill social values and norms that will build the personality of the students. This must be done so that students can become civilized individuals.

4. Family

The family can act as an institution of social control for children. The role of the family in social control is very large, because the family environment is the first and foremost place The main thing for children is to learn to live socially, including getting to know the values and norms that apply in society.

5. Traditional Court

The customary court is a social control institution that exists in people who still hold strong customs. Customary institutions are tasked with supervising or controlling citizens who violate customary norms. Punishment for violators of customary norms can be in the form of fines or expulsion from the environment of the indigenous peoples concerned.

6. Public figure

Community leaders are community leaders, both formal and informal. They are characterized because they have influence or authority or charisma in front of their people. Community leaders can play a role as social control institutions over their community members. For example, by educating, advising, guiding, fostering, reprimanding, and so on, so that members of society adhere to the values and norms that apply.

7. Mass media

The mass media is also effective for controlling the social life of society. Moreover, the mass media has wide coverage, so it can
control the behavior of leaders and citizens. The mass media can also shape public opinion so that it influences the attitudes and opinions of citizens about something.

8. Student

Students are often referred to as actors of social control. Student demonstrations to sue government leaders and officials who violate legal norms to the detriment of the people and the state are one example of social control.

Social Control Function

There are several functions of social control in society, including:

Strengthen people's belief in social norms.
Give rewards to citizens who comply with the norms.
Develop a fear of not doing something that is considered risky.
Creating a legal system (officially drafted rules accompanied by sanctions).

Forms of Social Control

There are several forms of social control that society can exercise to prevent unwanted behavior from occurring.

Gossip or Rumors
Gossip or often called rumors is a discussion of negative behavior carried out by someone without any real facts. Rumors will quickly spread in society so that many people will know and be involved in gossip. That way there will be many people who are affected and cynical about people who are gossiped about.
Reprimand
Reprimand is a criticism that is made directly and openly so that the perpetrators of irregularities will immediately realize the mistake that has been made. Usually a warning is given to people who are considered to violate ethics or disturb the comfort of local residents.
Punishment
Punishment or sanction is a negative form of reward with the aim of making the perpetrators of irregularities aware of what has been done or as a warning not to commit any more deviations.
Education
Education is the most effective way for someone to know, understand and at the same time practice the system of values and norms that apply in society.
Religion
Religion is the foundation that is taught to us so that we always maintain good relations between humans and fellow human beings. This good relationship will be realized by carrying out God's commands and staying away from His prohibitions. That way we will avoid social deviant behavior.

The Traits of Social Control

There are several characteristics of social control that we can see here.

By Nature

Preventive Measures is a form of social control that aims to take preventive action against possible violations of social norms.
Repressive Measures being active is a form of social control that aims to restore the harmony that once existed disturbed due to the occurrence of a violation by imposing sanctions in accordance with the violation done.
Curative Action is a form of social control carried out when social deviations occur.

By Method

Persuasive Action is a form of social control that is carried out without violence, for example by inviting, advising or guiding community members to act in accordance with the values and norms of society.
Coercive action is a form of social control carried out by coercion, in this case the form of coercion is realized by imposing sanctions or punishments according to the degree of deviation.

Based on the Actor

Personal control; namely the influence that comes from certain people or figures (role models).
Institutional control; namely the influence arising from the existence of an institution or institution.
Official control; namely social control or supervision carried out by official state institutions in accordance with applicable laws and regulations with clear and binding sanctions.
Unofficial control; namely social control or supervision carried out without clear formulation of rules or without strict legal sanctions.
