Knowing Soil Characteristics (Complete Discussion)
Knowing Soil Characteristics (Complete Discussion) – After yesterday we discussed about Layers on Soil, Soil Texture and Its Composition and Profile, now we will discuss about the characteristics of the soil.
Knowing Soil Characteristics (Complete Discussion)
Here are some soil physical properties:
Soil characteristics
Maybe we never know that the land that we have used to plant flowers and so on, has the following characteristics:
Soil Texture
If the earth elements consist only of sand grains, the texture of the soil is coarse. Conversely, if the soil elements consist only of clay, the texture of the soil is very fine. The ideal soil texture for agriculture is loam, i.e. sticky soil. In the manufacture of ceramics, bricks and tiles, the clay fraction is very necessary. The soil is said to be clay textured if the clay content is more. If the content of clay, sand and silt particles is balanced, the soil is called loamy soil.
Soil Structure
Soil structure is a way of binding soil grains to one another. In swamps or deserts the soil structure is less or not formed, because the soil grains are single or not bound to each other. Various types of soil structure, among others, in the form of lumps or crumbs. Soil structure in different layers of soil can be different. Farmer activities in the form of ploughing, fertilizing and tillage can change the original soil structure.
Soil Consistency
While soil consistency is a physical property of the soil that expresses the size of the cohesion and adhesion forces in various humidity. You can find out the consistency of the soil by trying to break up the soil, if it is difficult to break it means the soil, that the soil has a strong consistency.
Soil Moisture
During the dry season, the season for harvesting crops includes onions, peanuts, cassava and so on. The fields that looked dry turned out to have clumps of earth attached to nuts or onions and the soil was still damp. This moisture is called soil moisture.
Ground Air
Farmers plant crops, if it rains heavily or is hit by a flood the plants suffocate, because the plants lack soil air. This happens because all the pores are filled with soil moisture. The air is pushed out, so that plant roots lack O2, except for aquatic plants such as rice fields, kale and mangrove plants which have breathing roots.
Soil Color
The soil color is as follows:
- Yellow, comes from the mineral limonite (2Fe2O33H3O).
- Chocolate, derived from partially weathered acidic organic materials.
- White, derived from silica-quartz minerals (SiO3), lime (CaCO3), kaolin, bauxite, aluminum and silicates, gypsum (CaCO, 2H2O), nitrate, dissolved salts and certain organic colloids.
- Black, comes from organic materials that have decomposed violently and usually has something to do with the elements carbon (C), magnesium (Mg) and sulfur (S).
- Red, comes from the mineral hemafit (Fe2O3) or turgite (2Fe2O3H2O).
- Green, comes from ferrous oxide.
- Blue, comes from the mineral lilianite.
- The soil in the fields or rice fields is brown, red and yellow. The color of the soil in volcanic areas is different from the color of the soil in limestone mountains.
Soil Temperature
Soil temperatures in the morning, afternoon and evening are different. During the day the ground temperature is hotter than in the morning or evening.
Soil Permeability
Soil permeability is the rate at which water seeps into the soil through pores, both horizontally and vertically. The slow rate of water seepage is determined by the texture of the soil.
Soil Porosity
Soil is said to be porous when it easily or quickly absorbs water. This means that the soil has dominant large pores, for example soil with a sandy texture is porous. Porosity is the percentage of pore volume in the soil compared to the volume of the soil mass.
Soil Drainage
Soil drainage is the ability of the soil to drain and drain excess water, both groundwater and surface water. In soils with poor soil drainage, water will tend to pool. Handling of poor drainage properties is often done by building ditches.
Thus our explanation of the land in the article Knowing Soil Characteristics (Complete Discussion), Hopefully from the discussion above we will know more about the characteristics of the land that we often use. Thank you 🙂
