Properties of Solutions: Definition and Types of Solutions
Properties of Solutions: Definition and Types of Solutions – What are the characteristics of the solution? On this occasion About the knowledge.co.id will discuss what are the properties of the solution and other elements about it. Let's look at the discussion together in the article below to better understand it.
Properties of Solutions: Definition and Types of Solutions
Before learning what a solution is, we better need to know its properties first. The physical properties of the substances being mixed may change or not but the chemical properties cannot change. The following are the properties of the solution:
- It consists of a solvent and a solute
- there is no boundary field between its constituent components
- between the particles of the solvent (solvent) and the solute (the solute) cannot be distinguished
- the most widely considered component as a solvent. If the solution is liquid, then water is considered as the solvent
- composition throughout the section is the same.
Solvent is a substance used as a medium to dissolve other substances (solute). While the solute is a component of the solution which is less in amount than the solvent.
Apart from being determined by quantity, the terms dissolved and solvent are also defined by their physical properties. The solute has a structure that can be changed while the solvent has a structure that cannot be changed. Just an example is Syrup, in syrup the amount of water is more than sugar.
Therefore the structure of water does not change, while the structure of sugar changes from crystalline to molecular. Water is called the solvent while the ball is referred to as the solute.
Definition of Solution
Solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances. The solution consists of a solute (solute) and a solvent (solvent). Solutions are not only liquid, but also gaseous and solid.
Solution is a homogeneous mixture of molecules, atoms or ions of two or more substances. Called a mixture because the arrangement or composition can change. It is called homogeneous because the arrangement is so uniform that different parts cannot be observed, even with an optical microscope.
The solution phase can be gaseous, solid or liquid. Gas solutions such as air. Solid solutions such as bronze, amalgam and other metal alloys. Liquid solutions such as sea water, sugar solution in water, and others. The solution component consists of a solvent (solvent) and a solute (solute).
The solvent is the main component which is present in large quantities, while the minor component is the solute. Solutions are formed by mixing two or more pure substances whose molecules interact directly in a mixed state. All gases are miscible with each other, therefore a mixture of gases is a solution.
Types of Solutions and Examples of Solutions
As I mentioned above, solutions can also be solid or gaseous. In solid form, brass is an example of metal which is formed from a mixture of copper and zinc. Meanwhile, in the form of gas, air is an example.
In addition, solutions can also be classified based on the form of the solvent, degree of saturation, solute, solute and solvent phases and electrical conductivity. The following is each of the explanations above.
Types of Solutions Based on the Form of the Solvent
In this type of solution can be divided into 3 (three) types, namely solid solutions, liquid solutions, and gas solutions. The following is an explanation of the 3 types of solvent states.
Liquid solution, is a solution in which the solvent is a liquid. Examples of saka are sugar solution, salt solution and many others.
A solid solution is a solution in which the solvent is a solid. An example is 22 carat gold which is a mixture of silver and gold or other metals.
A gaseous solution is a solution in which the solvent is a gas. An example is the air that we can breathe everyday to breathe.
Types of Solutions Based on the Solute
Based on the amount of dissolved substance (solute), the solution can be divided into 2 (two) types, namely dilute solution and concentrated solution. The following are the two explanations.
Dilute Solution, is a solution that contains less solute (solute substance) compared to the solvent (solvent substance)
Concentrated solution, is a solution that contains more solute than the solvent.
Types of Solutions Based on Solvent and Dissolved Substance Phases
Based on the solute and solvent, the solution can be divided into 9 (nine) types, which are:
- A solution of gas in gas, for example, is air.
- A solution of a gas in a liquid, for example, is carbonized water.
- Solutions of gases in solids, for example, are hydrogen in metals
- A solution of a gas in a solid, for example, is water vapor in air
- Solutions of liquids in liquids, for example, are alcohols in water
- Liquid solutions in solids, for example, are water in wood, water in fruit, and so on.
- Solid solution in gas, for example, is aroma or odor
- A solid solution in a liquid, for example, is sugar water
- A solid solution in a solid, for example, is a mixture of iron and carbon
Types of Solutions Based on Electrical Conductivity
Based on the electrical conductivity, solutions can be divided into 2 (two) types, namely electrolyte solutions and non-electrolyte solutions. The following is an explanation of the type of solution.
- Electrolyte solution, is a type of solution that can conduct electric current, for example, ammonia, vinegar solution, HCI solution, sea water, lime water and so on.
- Non-electrolyte solution, is a type of solution that cannot conduct electricity, for example, a solution of urea, alcohol, and glucose solution.
Types of Solution Based on Saturation Level
Based on the degree of saturation, solutions can be divided into 3 (three) types, namely unsaturated, saturated and highly saturated solutions. The following is the presentation and explanation of the three solutions above.
Unsaturated Solution
Is a solution that contains less solute than necessary to make a saturated solution. In other words, a solution whose particles are not completely used up reacts with the reagent or can also be called still able to dissolve the substance. This solution can occur if the product of ion concentrations < Ksp means the solution is not saturated.
Saturated Solution
Is a solution that contains a solute equivalent to the solute. Or in other words, a solution in which the particles are completely used up reacts with the reactants, this solution can occur if the result of ion concentration = Ksp means that the saturated solution is saturated.
Super Saturated Solution
A solution that contains more solute than is needed to make the solution saturated, this solution can occur if the product of ion concentrations > Ksp means the solution is supersaturated (settles).
