The characteristics that constitute the essence of language include that language is a system of symbols, in the form of sounds, which are arbitrary, productive, dynamic, diverse, and humane.
The Function of Language and Its Nature as Communication Bilingualism
Language is a means of communication or interaction that humans have in social life. As a system, besides being systematic, language is also systemic. That is, the language has a certain pattern, not arranged randomly.
The language system is in the form of symbols in the form of sounds. That is, the symbols are in the form of sounds, which are commonly called speech sounds or language sounds. Each language symbol represents something called meaning or concept.
The language sound symbol is arbitrary, meaning that the relationship between the symbol and what it symbolizes is not mandatory. can change, and it cannot be explained why the symbol conceives a certain meaning (Chaer and Agustina, 2004:12). In addition to the sound symbols of language being arbitrary, there are also those which are conventional (simple) meaning that every language speaker will obey the relationship between the symbol and what it symbolizes.
Language is productive, meaning that with an unlimited number of elements, speech units can be made that are almost unlimited (Chaer and Agustina, 2004:13). Language is dynamic, meaning that language cannot be separated from various possible changes that can occur at any time. Changes that are often experienced by language are at the phonological, morphological, syntactic, semantic, and lexicon levels.
Language has a variety of meanings, even though a language has certain rules, structures, or certain patterns in common, because the language is used by heterogeneous speakers who Of course, having different social backgrounds and habits, the language becomes diverse, both at the phonological, morphological, syntactic, semantic, and linguistic levels. lexicon.
Language can be said to be humane, only humans have it. Animals and other living things do not have indicators in using the nature of language. In the view of linguistics, language is a verbal communication tool that is used to interact with the surrounding environment.
Language function
Simply put, language is a tool for interacting or a tool for communicating in the sense of a tool for conveying thoughts, ideas, concepts or feelings. In general, the function of language to convey thoughts is considered too narrow.
Here language functions as a tool to talk about objects or events that surround speakers or that exist in culture in general. This referential function of language gave birth to the traditional notion that language is a tool to express thoughts, to state how the speaker thinks about the world in around him.
When viewed in terms of coding, then the language is used to talk about the language itself. Inside the language function here is metalingual And metalinguistic., namely language functioned to explain the meaning of the language itself.
Language as Human Communication
Language is a communication tool used by humans in interacting with their social environment. There are two kinds of language communication, namely unidirectional communication and two-way communication, as the sender and receiver of information. In one-way communication this is usually informing, whereas in two-way communication alternately the sender can be the receiver and the receiver can be the giver of information (sender).
Language can influence human behavior. So if the speaker wants to know the listener's response to his speech, he can see the bait feedback which can be in the form of certain behaviors performed by listeners after hearing si listener. As a communication tool, language consists of two aspects, namely, linguistic and non-linguistic.
These two aspects communicate with each other and build that language communication. These linguistic and non-linguistic aspects function as a communication tool, together with the context of the situation forming or constructing a particular situation in the communication process.
Bilingualism
Linguistic events that occur due to language contact by the speaker's language style. The speaking community is closed, untouched by other speech communities due to the remote geographic location or deliberately not wanting to interact with other speech communities.
Such a speech community is said to be a monolingual speech community. In contrast, an open speech community means that those who have a relationship with other speech communities will certainly experience language contact from other speech communities. Such a speech community is said to be a multilingual speech community. Language contact of multilungal speakers is a symptom of bilingualism.
The term bilingualism is the development of a term from English (bilingualism) in Indonesian which is also known as bilingualism. Literally the term bilingalism refers to the use of two languages or language codes. Sociolinguistically, bilingualism is the use of two languages by speakers in their interactions with other people alternately (Mackey and Fishman in Chaer and Agustina, 2004:84).

A speaker can be called a bilingual or in Indonesian he is also called a bilingual, if he can use two languages. To be able to use two languages, people must master two languages. The first language is the mother tongue which is usually abbreviated as B1, and the second language is the language that becomes the second language which is usually abbreviated as B2.
Bloomfield in his famous book language (1933:56) says that bilingualism is the ability of a speaker to use two languages equally well. So according to Bloomfield a person can be said to be a bilingual speaker if he can use B1 and B2 well.
However, Bloomfield's concept has been questioned a lot, because how can a speaker use his B1 and B2 well? and whether there are speakers who can use L1 and B2 well, if so, then these speakers have the opportunity to learn to use two languages for a long time.
Thus our discussion this time about The Function of Language and Its Nature as Communication Bilingualism, I hope the article above can be useful for all of us. Thank you 🙂
