Understanding Fasting
In language, fasting or shaum in Arabic means to refrain from everything. So, fasting is refrain from all matters such as food, drink, talk, restrain lust and lust, etc.

Kinds of Fasting
There are several types of fasting, including:
- Compulsory fasting consisting of: Ramadan fasting, vows and expiation.
- Sunnah fasting which consists of fasting Monday, Thursday, Muharam, Shawwal, Arofah, etc.
- Makruh fasting which consists of fasting specifically on Fridays and Saturdays.
- Haram fasting which consists of fasting on Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha and fasting throughout the year.
Compulsory Fasting
Ramadan fasting. Namely fasting for a full month in the month of Ramadan which is obligatory for every Muslim who has reached puberty. The obligation to carry out fasting in the month of Ramadan is contained in the Qur'an, Al-Baqoroh verse 183.
Votive fast. It is a fast caused by a promise, a vow in language is a promise. So that fasting which is declared obligatory.
Fasting kafarat or kifarat. Namely fasting that is done to replace dams or fines for violations that are obligatory. This fast is carried out due to sinful acts, so it aims to erase the sins that have been committed. As for the types of fasting expiation, among others: expiation for violating an oath in the name of Allah, expiation in performing the pilgrimage, expiation because of intercourse or sexual intercourse between husband and wife in the month of Ramadan, killing accidentally, killing animals while on the move ihram.

Sunnah fasting Monday Thursday. The Messenger of Allah has ordered his people to always fast on Mondays and Thursdays, because on Monday is his birthday and Thursday is the day when the Qur'an was first revealed. And on Mondays and Thursdays too, human deeds are examined, so he wants when they are examined, he is in a state of fasting.
Shawwal sunnah fasting. Fasting six days in the month of Shawwal or after the month of Ramadan. Can be done sequentially starting from the second day of Shawwal or done in a non-consecutive manner. The Messenger of Allah said, which means: "The virtue of Ramadan fasting accompanied by Shawwal fasting is like someone who fasts for a year (HR. Muslim).
Muharram fasting. Namely fasting in the month of Muharram and the most important thing is on the 10th day of the month of Muharram, namely assyuro'. This fasting has the priority and the most important after fasting Ramadan.
Arofah fasting. Namely fasting on the 9th day of Dzuhijjah, where the specialty is that the sins of the past year and the sins of the coming year will be erased (HR. Muslim). The sins in question are specifically for minor sins, because major sins can only be forgiven by way of repentance or repentance nasuha.
Fasting in the month of Sha'ban. In this month of Sha'ban, all deeds will be raised to the Lord so that it is ordered to increase fasting.

Makruh Fasting

Haram Fasting

- Fast every day or all year round and forever.
