Characteristics of New Poetry: Definition, Types and Examples of New Poetry
Starting from the Balai Pustaka generation which developed from 1920-1933, poetry at that time was still in the form of mantras, rhymes, and rhymes which were poetry bound by old conventions.
Along with its development, Pujangga Baru magazine was published in May 1933 as a mouthpiece the poets who also started the emergence of a new type of poetry that began to let go of the bonds of poetry long.
Several figures such as Sutan Takdir Alisjahbana (1908-1986), Amir Hamzah (1911-1946), and Arjmin Pane (1908-1970) were poets in this generation of New Pujangga.

Definition of New Poetry
New poetry is a literary work that appears after old poetry. This new poetry is also called modern poetry and appeared almost simultaneously with contemporary poetry. This new poetry is poetry that is free and not bound by rules, like the old poetry.
The new poetry is freer in form than the old poetry, free in terms of the number of syllables, the number of lines, and the rhymes. Usually, the author's name for this new poem is already known and has been included.
New poetry is one type of poetry in terms of its rules which have a freer form. Whether it's rules regarding syllables, number of lines, as well as rhymes and also rhythm. This new poem is not as stiff as the old one.
New Types of Poetry and Examples

Based on the content and discussion of the poems, new poetry is divided into seven types namely hymns, ballads, odes, romances, epigrams, elegiacs and satires.
Ballad
Ballad is a poem whose contents are about a particular story or story. This new type of poetry consists of three stanzas, each stanza consisting of 8 lines. The rhyme scheme used in the ballad is a-b-a-b-b-c-c-b and then starts with the following rhyme scheme a-b-a-b-b-c-b-c.

Hymn

Octave or stanza
is a poem consisting of eight lines in each stanza
Sonata
is a poem consisting of fourteen lines and divided into two. The first two stanzas consist of four lines each, and the second stanza contains three lines each. Sonatas are different from other types of new poetry. This difference lies in the lack of freedom in terms of rhyme. The rhyme in the first stanza is like the rhyme in the second stanza. Meanwhile, the rhyme pattern in the third stanza is the same as in the fourth stanza.
