Potential Land And Critical Land – The level of suitability of land use patterns is called Land Capability Class. Based on its ability class, land is grouped into eight classes.

Class I to IV land is suitable land for agricultural business, while class V to VIII land is land that is not suitable for agricultural business. This discrepancy could be due to high processing costs compared to the results that can be achieved.

Potential Land and Critical Land (Full Discussion)

Let's discuss the complete potential land and critical land below.

Land Capability Class

In more detail, land capability classes can be described as follows.

Class I

It is land with flat soil characteristics, rather fine soil granules, easy to cultivate, very responsive to fertilization and has a good water drainage system. Class I soils are suitable for all types of agricultural use without the need for soil preservation. Fertilization can be done to increase fertility.

Class II

It is land with gentle slopes, the soil grain is fine to slightly coarse. Class II soils are somewhat sensitive to erosion. This soil is suitable for farming with light soil preservation measures, such as tillage based on elevation and use of green manure.

Class III

Is land with the characteristics of the land is located in a slightly sloping area with a water irrigation system that is not good. Class III soils are suitable for all types of farming with special soil preservation measures such as terracing, crop rotation and row planting systems. To maintain soil fertility it needs fertilization.

Class IV

It is a land characterized by land located in a sloping area of around 15% -30% with a poor drainage system. This class IV soil can still be used as agricultural land with a more specific and heavier level of soil preservation.

Class V

It is land with the characteristics of being located in a flat or slightly concave area, but the surface contains a lot of stone and clay. Therefore there are areas that are sunken, the soil is often flooded so that the soil acidity level is high. This land is not suitable for agriculture, but more suitable for growing grass or forestry.

Class VI

is land with the characteristics of thin soil thickness and is located in a rather steep area with a slope of about 30% -45%. Class VI land is easily eroded, so this land is more suitable for pasture or forestation.

Class VII

It is land with the characteristics of being located in a very steep area with a slope of between 45% -65% and the soil has experienced severe erosion. This soil is completely unsuitable for agriculture, but more suitable for growing annual crops (perennials).

Potential Land And Critical Land

Class VIII

It is land with the characteristics of being located in an area with a slope of above 65%, the soil grain is coarse and easily separated from its parent. This land is very prone to damage. Class VIII land must be left naturally without human intervention or made a nature reserve.

Another factor that needs to be considered in cultivating agricultural land is soil productivity in a normal environment to produce certain crops. Example: the level of soil productivity when planted with rice is 5 tons/ha. So, soil productivity shows the level of production and per unit area for a particular crop.

That's the discussion about Potential Land and Critical Land (Full Discussion) which is divided into several classes according to the capabilities of each land. Hopefully can add to your knowledge, thank you.
