  • John Constable

John Constable is an artist from England who became one of the leading artists who had a major influence on the development of naturalism. He himself rejected the landscape painting style of his time. John states that "Painter's habit at this time is bravura, namely an attempt to depict something that is beyond the truth".

John Constable chose to create his own representation based on transferring what he saw as honestly as possible and then applying it to the canvas. John also chose to paint what was around him first.

In a letter written to a colleague, the contents of the letter were "I should paint my own best places". Besides that, he is also interested in the alternation of light and clouds in nature without discriminating which one is more beautiful.

John Constable Dedham Vale's Naturalism Painting (1816) & His Analysis

Constable techniques have not been fully accomplished here. This work was painted in his youth where this painting has a political background and the war in his country is currently chaotic. Nonetheless this painting demonstrates his commitment to accurate and honest observations of nature, seen in the details of the trees and sky that are painted in detail.

The eye of the observer directed to the farthest parts of the river view, along the river's route to the far tower of Dedham's church, though small, forms a strong focal point in the piece. Notice that the trees on either side of the canvas form a frame to the center of the image showing the main scene.

He displays the scenery around his house nicely, through aesthetic vision without exaggerating it (Naturalism).

Thomas Cole's Naturalism Painting Lake with Dead Trees (Catskill) (1825) & Its Analysis

Lake with Dead Trees depicts a view of the Catskill Mountains in southeastern New York. On the shores of a quiet lake surrounded by dead trees, and two deer moving to and fro. The background of the scenery is painted at the time when dusk is coming. Behind the forest the sun that was about to set still shone its light through the cloudy sky.

Even though this work is a naturalist painting that focuses on the technicality and accuracy of drawing, there are meanings or interpretations that can be produced. This painting is often interpreted as contemplation and dialogue between life and death, and the passage of time is a silent witness to this dialogue.
