Bipolar Disorder or Bipolar Disorder is a mental disorder that attacks a person's psychological condition which is characterized by extreme mood swings such as mania and depression, hence the previous medical term called manic depressive.
The sufferer's mood can change suddenly between two opposite poles (bipolar), namely excessive happiness (mania) and sadness (depression) without a definite pattern or time.
Everyone usually has experienced a good mood (high mood) and a bad mood (low mood). However, a person with bipolar disorder has extreme mood swings with extremely volatile patterns of feelings.
At one time, a person suffering from bipolar disorder can feel very excited and passionate (mania). When his mood changes for the worse, he can be very mentally depressed, pessimistic, hopeless, even to the point of having the urge to commit suicide.
An elevated mood is clinically known as mania, or when it's light it's called hypomania. People who experience episodes of mania also often experience episodes of mental distress, or mixed episodes in which both features of mania and mental distress occur at the same time.
These episodes are usually separated by periods of normal mood, but in some people mental stress and mania may change very quickly, known as a rapid-cycle. Extreme manic episodes can sometimes give rise to indications of psychosis such as delusions and hallucinations.
Manic episodes usually start suddenly and last between 2 weeks and 5 months. Conversely, mental stress tends to last longer. Hypomanic episodes have a milder degree than manic. Bipolar disorder is broken down into bipolar I, bipolar II, cyclothymia, and other types based on the nature and experience of the severity of the mood episode; Range is often interpreted as a bipolar spectrum.
The incidence of bipolar disorder ranges from 0.3% - 1.5%, which is a low percentage when compared to the percentage of incidents categorized as schizophrenia. Research on the influence of genetic factors on bipolar disorder has been carried out by linking families and twins. Research results show that around 10% - 15% of families of sufferers who have bipolar disorder have experienced an episode of mood problems.
