Phrase Examples: Types of Phrases with Explanations


A phrase is a combination or unit of words that is formed from two or more words more which has one grammatical meaning (a meaning that changes by adjusting a context). This simple phrase is a combination or grouping of two or more words but cannot form a perfect sentence because it does not have a predicate.

Below are the characteristics of the phrase are as follows:

  • The phrase must consist of at least two or more words.
  • Occupy or have a grammatical function in a sentence.
  • In phrases must have one grammatical meaning.
  • Phrases are nonpredicative.

Based on the definitions and characteristics above, we can conclude that the phrase is a combination of two or more words that cannot or cannot form perfect sentences because they do not have predicate. Then we can make an example of a phrase that is as follows:

The sentence 'A number of teachers are in a meeting' cannot be written as 'A number are in a meeting' because the word 'teacher' is a central element. Likewise, the sentence 'Two men in class' cannot be written as 'Two in class' because the word 'men' is a central element in the phrase 'two men'. Meanwhile, the sentence 'presidential election every five years' cannot be written as 'presidential five years once' or also 'fifth election' because the word 'election' and the word 'year' are an element center.

  • Exocentric Phrase

Exocentric phrases are phrases that do not have an equal position in their elements. In other words, exocentric phrases do not have a central or UP element.

A noun phrase is a phrase that has a central element in the form of a noun.
