The meaning of birthday is increasing someone's age, but in essence it means reducing our age because we have gone through it.

Therefore, in Islamic teachings, we should be encouraged to always be grateful for the pleasures of life and health that has been given as well as self-reflection from previous ages, so that this year's repeat can be even more obedient and better Again.

Birthdays or milads are special moments where people celebrate their birthday every year with their loved ones. In Islam, birthday means increasing age and the closer every Muslim is to death. Therefore, Islam teaches that if you find a birthday, you should do a lot of muhasabah.

Muhasabah here means self-introspection. As for celebrating a birthday in Islam, it is something that is disallowed, but it is better to commemorate it with thanksgiving events with people who are not fortunate, for example with orphans, the poor and the poor poor.

We are also encouraged to pray a lot on birthdays. Specifically, there are no verses or surahs in the Koran that are read on birthdays.

Quranic Verses about Birthdays

Actually, in Islam, birthday celebrations do not have special worship, either activities or prayers. In the Koran itself, there is no command to celebrate birthdays. Because this celebration does not originate from Islamic teachings.

But in Surat Maryam, verse 33 there is a meaning of birthday which is used as one of the arguments regarding the permissibility of praying at a certain age, you can read it below this :

وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَيَّ يَوْمَ وُلِدْتُ وَيَوْمَ أَمُوتُ وَيَوْمَ أُبْعَثُ حَيًّا

“Was-salāmu ‘alayya yauma wulittu wa yauma amụtu wa yauma ub’aṡu ḥayyā”

It means :

"And peace may be bestowed upon me, on the day I was born, on the day I died and on the day I was raised to life again"

In addition, in the Qur'an, Allah also says in QS Al-Ahqaf verse 15:

حَتّٰى إِذَا بَلَغَ أَشُدَّهُ وَبَلَغَ أَرْبَعِينَ سَنَةً قَالَ رَبِّ أَوزِعْنِي أَنْ أَشْكُرَ نِعْمَتَكَ الَّتِي أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيَّ وَعَلٰى وَالِدِيَّ وَأَنْ أَعْمَلَ صَالِحًا تَرْضَاهُ وَأَصْلِحْ لِي فِي ذُرِّيّّتِي، إِنِّي تُبْتُ إِلَيكَ وَإنِّي مِنَ المُسْلِمِينَ

.. hattā iżā balaga asyuddahụ wa balaga arba'īna sanatang qāla rabbi auzi'nī an asykura ni'matakallatī an'amta 'alayya wa 'alā wālidayya wa an a'mala ṣāliḥan tarḍāhu wa aṣliḥ lī fī żurriyyatī, innī tubtu ilaika wa innī min-muslimīn

It means :

“… so that when he is an adult and he reaches forty years of age he prays: 'Rabb, give me a servant guidance so that I can be grateful for Your blessings that You have bestowed on me and my parents servant. And so that I do good deeds that You are pleased with. And give me goodness that will flow to my children and grandchildren, truly I repent to You and truly I am a believer."

Allah also said in Surah al-'Ashr verses 1-3 regarding Allah's oath to time, that most people are negligent in taking advantage of the time Allah has given them,

وَالْعَصْرِ
إِنَّ الْإِنْسَانَ لَفِي خُسْرٍ
إِلَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْحَقِّ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ

wal-‘aṣr (1)
innal-insāna lafī khusr (2)
illallażīna āmanụ wa 'amiluṣ-ṣāliḥāti wa tawāṣau bil-ḥaqqi wa tawāṣau biṣ-ṣabr (3)

It means :

1. For the sake of time
2. Verily man is in a manifest loss,
3. Except for those who believe and do good deeds, and advise advising them to obey the truth, and advice advising them to obey patience

Birthdays are also supposed to make us aware of the passage of time, which has been determined by Allah, including arranging the passage of time in this universe, as stated in Surah Ar-Ra'd Verse 2

اللَّهُ الَّذِي رَفَعَ السَّمَاوَاتِ بِغَيْرِ عَمَدٍ تَرَوْنَهَا ۖ ثُمَّ اسْتَوَىٰ عَلَى الْعَرْشِ ۖ وَسَخَّرَ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ ۖ كُلٌّ يَجْرِي لِأَجَلٍ مُسَمًّى ۚ يُدَبِّرُ الْأَمْرَ يُفَصِّلُ الْآيَاتِ لَعَلَّكُمْ بِلِقَاءِ رَبِّكُمْ تُوقِنُونَ

“Allāhullażī rafa'as-samāwāti bigairi 'amadin taraunahā ṡummastawā 'alal-'arsyi wa sakhkharasy-syamsa wal-qamar, kulluy yajrī li`ajalim musammā, yudabbirul-amra yufaṣṣilul-āyāti la'allakum biliqā`i rabbikum tụqinụn”

It means :

"Allah who raised the sky without a pillar (as) you see, then He resided above the Throne, and subjected the sun and the moon. Each circulates until a predetermined time. Allah regulates (His creatures) affairs, explains the signs (His greatness), so that you believe in (your) meeting with your Lord.”

And lastly, we are also told by Allah that every people must have their own set age, as stated in Surah Al-A'raf Verse 34

وَلِكُلِّ أُمَّةٍ أَجَلٌ ۖ فَإِذَا جَاءَ أَجَلُهُمْ لَا يَسْتَأْخِرُونَ سَاعَةً ۖ وَلَا يَسْتَقْدِمُونَ

"Wa likulli ummatin ajal, fa iżā jā`a ajaluhum lā yasta`khirụna sā'ataw wa lā yastaqdimụn"

It means :

“Each ummah has a time limit; so when the time comes they cannot postpone it even for a moment and cannot (also) advance it.”

In Indonesian society celebrating birthdays has become commonplace, but you need to remember to celebrate birthdays or birthdays should not be excessive so that you forget the meaning of the birthday itself.

It means; Dear Allah. Extend our life, make our bodies healthy, enlighten our hearts, keep faith in us, improve our practices, widen our sustenance, bring us closer to goodness, and keep us away from evil, grant all our needs and desires, to religion, the world, and hereafter. Indeed, You are the Almighty over all things, amen

اَللهُمَّ اِنَّا نَسْأَلُكَ سَلاَمَةً فِى الدِّيْنِ وَعَافِيَةً فِى الْجَسَدِ وَزِيَادَةً فِى الْعِلْمِ وَبَرَكَةً فِى الرِّزْقِ وَتَوْبَةً قَبْلَ الْمَوْتِ وَرَحْمَةً عِنْدَ الْمَوْتِ وَمَغْفِرَةً بَعْدَ الْمَوْتِ

Allohuma inna nasaluka salamatan fid daini wa 'afiyata fil jasadi wa ziyadatan fil 'ilmi wa baroktan fir rizqi wa repentance qablal mauti wa rohmatan indalmauti wa maghfirotan ba'dal mauti.

It means; O Allah, we ask You for safety in religion, and well-being/refreshment in the body and addition of knowledge, and blessings of sustenance, as well as repentance before death and grace at death, and forgiveness after death.

رَبِّ هَبْلِيْ مِنْ لَدُنْكَ ذُرِّيَّةً طَيِّبَةً اِنَّكَ سَمِيْعُ الدُّعَاءِ

Robbi hablii min ladunka dzurriyyatan thoyyibatan innaka samii'ud du'aa-i.

Meaning: Ya Robbi, give me from Your side a good child, indeed You are All-hearing prayer, (your servant).
