Data communication is the exchange of data between two or more devices through a transmission medium such as a cable. In order for data communication to occur, devices must communicate with each other or be connected to each other as part of a communication system, these devices consist of a combination of hardware and software. Communication systems can run effectively depending on four fundamental characteristics, namely delivery, accuracy, timeliness and jitter.

Basic characteristics of data communication
As explained above, that the communication system will run smoothly depending on the four basic characteristics. The following are the basic characteristics of data communication:
Delivery
The system must send data to the destination, then the data must be received by the user according to what was sent by the sender.
accuracy
A system must provide accurate data. If the data is inaccurate then it cannot be used.
Punctuality
A system must send data at the right time, if the delivery is late then the data cannot be used. For example sending video or audio, if the delivery time is right then it will provide data that matches the original without any significant delay. Such a transmission is called a real-time transmission.
Jitters
An uneven delay in the delivery of video or audio packets. In essence, this jitter is a variation from the first delay to the next delay.
Data communication components
Next we will discuss the components of data communication, data communication has five components, namely:
- Sender – A device that transmits data.
- Recipient – A device that receives data.
- Data – An information that is transferred from sender to receiver.
- Delivery Medium – A medium used to transmit the data.
- Protocol – A rule whose function is to adjust or harmonize the relationship.
Data communication also has a function and purpose, including:
- Streamlining a large amount of data transmission without an error.
- Allows use of computer systems & supporting equipment remotely.
- Can support management in terms of control because it allows the use of centralized or distributed computer systems.
- Can be used to communicate for people who have different geographic locations.
- Able to disseminate information quickly.
Forms of data communication
In addition to characteristics and components, data communication also has forms, what are the forms of data communication, see the following description:
Offline Communication System – Is a system for sending data through telecommunication facilities from one location to a data processing center but the data sent is not directly processed to the CPU. There are several tools needed in offline communication, including:
- Terminal – I/O used to send and receive data remotely using telecommunication facilities. There are many types of terminals, for example: paper tape, disk drives, etc.
- Communication Line – A telecommunications facility that is often used, for example: telephone, telegraph etc.
- Modem – Is a tool that converts data from a digital code system into an analog code or vice versa.
Online Communication System – In this system, data sent via a computer terminal can be directly processed by the computer when we need it. This online communication system can include:
- Realtime System – A data processing system that requires transaction rates at very high speeds.
- Batch Processing – A data processing technique by first stacking the data and then grouping the data in a group called a batch.
- Time Sharing System – Techniques for using or using the online system by several users.
- Distributed Data Processing System – An interactive computer system that is geographically dispersed and linked by telecommunication lines, respectively Computers are also capable of processing data independently and have the ability to communicate with other computers a system.
