Legend Example

Legend of Kapitan Pattimura

Kapitan Pattimura, whose real name is Thomas Matulessy, was born on the island of Negri Haria Saparua, South Maluku on June 8, 1783.

According to the government version of the Pattimura biography which was published for the first time. M. Sapija wrote "The hero Kapitan Pattimura is of noble descent, originating from Nusa Ina (Serang)"

His father, Antonim Matulessy and grandfather, Kasimiliali Pattimura mattulessy Pattimura, were heroes who fought against the Dutch (VOC). Formerly Pattimura was a former sergeant in the British army, but in 1816 England lost to the Netherlands.

The return of Dutch colonialism in 1817 was met with strong opposition from the public, because for 2 centuries the Dutch monopolized trade and had poor social relations.

The Maluku people tried to fight back with the Pattimura leadership. Saparua Maryarakat crowned him so he was titled Kapitan Pattimura.

On May 16, 1817, an extraordinary battle took place. Fort Duurstede was recaptured, including all the Dutch troops who were conquered with Resident Johannes Rudolph van den Berg.

Dutch troops sent to seize the Duurstede fort were successfully conquered by Kapitan Pattimura's troops. As a result, for three months the fort was controlled by Kapitan Pattimura's troops, but the Dutch did not want to just give up.

The Dutch, who did not want to lose, attacked again with modern armed forces. In the end, Kapitan Pattimura's troops were defeated and pulled back.

Kapitan Pattimura was recaptured by Dutch troops in Siri Sori, some of his friends were taken to Ambon. When he got there he was persuaded to cooperate, but he always refused.

Finally Kapitan Pattimura was hanged. The Dutch, who still wanted to force him to cooperate, still tried the day before being hanged, but still refused, he showed an example of real struggle.

In front of the Victoria Ambon fort on December 16, 1817, the Kapitan Pattimura was executed. As a form of respect, every May 15 in Ambon City an event is held to commemorate Pattimura's struggle. The Ambonese will take to the Cakalele dance street while carrying the Salawaku machete which is also Pattimura's main weapon.

Kapitan Pattimura died as a national hero of his struggle. He left an implied message to the legacy of this nation that never sells the honor of his family, especially his nation and country.
