Definition of Arteries or Arteries
Arteries are muscular blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart. This function is different from the function of the veins that carry blood towards the heart. The walls of the vessels around these arteries consist of 3 layers in the form of an elastic outer layer, The middle layer is made up of smooth muscle cells and the inner layer is made up of a single layer of smooth muscle cells thin walled.
Arteries have thick, strong and elastic walls that help provide the heart's pumping power to carry blood throughout the body. The pumping of the heart forces blood to flow, so this exerts pressure along the walls of the vessels through which it passes and makes it beat. Generally, lethargic veins or arteries are in the body.
The largest artery is also called the aorta. This vessel originates from the left ventricle of the heart and has the function of carrying oxygenated blood or clean blood throughout the body. These vessels have valves that are located just outside the heart. The aorta has two branches, one to the head and the other to the lower body. The two arteries that leave the heart then branch into smaller arteries. The smallest arteries are called arterioles. Arterioles are thinner than a comb of hair. These arterioles branch into capillaries.
Besides the aorta, the arteries that carry blood away from the heart are the pulmonary arteries or the pulmonary arteries. The pulmonary arteries have their origins in the right ventricle of the heart and are smaller in size than the aorta. The pulmonary artery has the function of carrying blood containing carbon dioxide or dirty blood and water vapor to the lungs. Through the arteries, blood from the heart is circulated to all body tissues, including the tissues that make up the heart.
Arteries whose function is to carry oxygen from nutrients to the heart are called crown arteries or coronary arteries. These vessels have a very small size so they are easily clogged with fat lumps. Blockage of blood flow causes some cells in the heart to become deprived of food and oxygen. The occurrence of blockage of the heart arteries is called coronaryiasis.
Function of the Arteries
The functions of the arteries are as follows:
