Measurement is the determination of a quantity, size or capacity, usually used in a standard or dimension or unit of measure. The definition of measurement can also be referred to as giving a number to an object, or a certain thing by someone for clear and agreed terms or formulations.
Definition of Measurement According to Experts
- Nunnally & Bernstein, 1994 : Measurement can be defined as a process of assigning numbers or labels to attributes with standardized or agreed upon rules for representing that attribute be measured.
- Mardapi 2004: Measurement is basically the activity of determining the number of an object systematically.
- lien: Measurement is a number of data collected using objective measurement tools for analysis purposes.
- Budi Hatoro : Measurement or measurement is a process or activity to determine the quantity of something that is numerical. Measurements are more quantitative in nature, in fact they are instruments for making assessments.

From the understanding of the experts mentioned above, it can be concluded that the meaning of measurement is the activity of measuring carried out by comparing results a certain measure that is carried out systematically, and the results of the measurements are quantitative in nature and the measuring instrument used is a standard measuring instrument.
Kinds of Measurements
There are 2 types of measurement, namely direct measurement and indirect measurement.
Direct measurement
That is equating the value of the quantity measured with the standard quantity that is accepted as a unit.
Indirect measurement
Is a measurement to measure one quantity by means of measuring another quantity.
An example of measurement is when buying rice and the seller measures the mass of the rice, which means the seller equates the value of the mass quantity with a predetermined mass unit. Such as mass units kg (kilogram), gr (gram) and other mass units.
Various Measuring Instruments
When you want to measure an object, you need equipment that matches the quantity you want to measure. Measuring instruments in physics are divided into 4 types, namely length measuring devices, mass measuring devices, time measuring devices and electric current measuring devices.

Length Measurement Equipment
Long measuring devices are used to measure the length of something. There are 3 different length measuring devices, namely rulers, calipers and screw micrometers. The use of length measuring equipment is adjusted to the desired level of accuracy so as to minimize the formation of errors in the measurement process.

Ruler is a length measuring tool that has a small scale of 1mm or 0.1 centimeter which only has a length of about 50cm or 100cm.
Vernier calipers
Calipers are used to measure the thickness of a metal plate. to measure the outside and inside diameter of the pipe. There are parts in the caliper, namely the fixed jaw and the sliding jaw. Fixed jaws have a scale called the main scale, the smallest part of the main scale has a length of 1 millimeter.
On the other hand, the sliding jaw has a scale called the nonius scale or known as the vernier scale. On the long nonius scale of 20 the scale is 1 millimeter, you could say one part of the nonius is 0.05 millimeters, the smallest scale is also 0.05 millimeters or 0.005cm.
Micrometer Screw
A screw micrometer is a long measuring tool that has a greater degree of accuracy when compared to a vernier caliper or ruler. the smallest scale of the Micrometer Screw reaches 0.001cm or 0.01mm.
Mass Measurement Equipment
To measure the mass of goods, equipment called a balance is generally used or often called a scale. The balance sheet has several types, such as a market balance, a 2-arm balance and a 3-arm balance.
The market balance is generally used in traditional markets or in shops.
Two-arm balances are common in the laboratory. The use of a 2-arm balance is almost the same as the method of using a market balance.
Balances with 3 arms are generally in the laboratory. Time Measurement Equipment
Equipment for measuring time in life is a kind of clock and stopwatch.
