Definition of Ocean Currents
Ocean currents are the mass movement of sea water from one place to another. This movement can be horizontal or horizontal in the form of surface currents or basic currents, it can also be is the vertical movement of water masses from the bottom layer of water to the top layer or on the contrary.
Types of Ocean Currents
This type of ocean currents can be distinguished by temperature and location. Based on the temperature, these ocean currents can be divided into two, namely:
- hot current, which is an ocean current with a higher (hot) water temperature than the seawater temperature it is visiting. For example: Gulf Stream and Kuroshiwo. This current comes from the tropics to the temperate regions.
- Cold current, is an ocean current where the water temperature is lower (cold) than the temperature of the sea water visited. Examples: Labrador Current, Benguela Current, Peru Current and Oyashiwo Current.
The types of ocean currents based on their location are divided into four types, namely:
1. Upper current (surface currents), are ocean currents that move as currents on the sea surface. For example: all ocean currents are caused by wind.
2. Undercurrent, namely water that moves as ocean currents is on the seabed. If the direction of movement changes to the vertical, this current will become up welling And sinkin in some coastal areas.
3. Long Shore Currentis the direction of current flow parallel to the shoreline.
4. Rip Currentis a current that is on a fine sandy beach and has rather large wavy waves. The direction of movement is perpendicular to the coastline. Usually rip current this is capable of dragging the sand underneath along with the people who are in that place to a deeper sea. As an example at Parangtritis beach which has a speed of 80 km/hour.
Factors Causing Ocean Currents
There are several factors that can trigger or cause ocean currents, namely:
♦ Wind movement that has a fixed direction throughout the year. For example trade winds that blow in the tropics.
♦ The difference in sea level. This difference in water level in the oceans results in mass movement of sea water to fill the lower part of the sea water. Currents that arise due to differences in the surface height of the water level in the oceans are called compensation current or charging current.
♦ Island or continent obstacles. The existence of island or continental barriers can cause ocean currents to turn according to the continental coastline or become hemispherical currents. Examples: the Brasilia Current and the East Australian Current.
♦ Temperature difference. Cold ocean currents have a greater density than hot ocean water. Seawater in the polar regions is cold, so it has a greater density than hot seawater.
♦ Differences in salt content or salinity. Seawater will flow from seas with high salt levels to seas with low salt levels.
