Scale is the ratio between the distance on the map and the actual distance from the area depicted on the map. Scale is very useful for calculating the distance between two locations on the map, allowing us to can directly measure the distance by just looking at the map without having to go directly to the location and measure it.

Based on the size of the scale
Based on the size of the map scale is divided into five, which include:
Cadastral scale maps or engineering maps
This map is at a scale of 1:100 to 1:5000. usually used for land surveying.
Large scale map
i.e. maps scaled from 1:5000 to 1:250,000. Generally used to describe relatively narrow areas, such as villages or sub-districts.
Medium scale map
namely maps with a scale of 1: 250,000 to 1: 500,000. Used to describe rather large areas such as mapping districts or cities.
Small scale map
namely maps with a scale of 1: 500,000 to 1: 1,000,000. This map is used to describe large areas such as provinces.

Apart from being based on size, the types of scales that are commonly found in cartography are based on their shape. The forms of the scale are distinguished as follows.
Verbal Scale
Verbal scale is a scale that shows the comparison of distances on the map in a direct sentence that is absolute and firm.
For example, if a map is written on a scale of 1 cm for 1 km. This means that every 1 cm distance on the map is equivalent to 1 km distance on the actual distance.
Another example is 1 inch = 1 mile, meaning that 1 inch on the map represents 1 mile on the ground. So, the scale is 1:63,360 (1 mile = 63,360 inches).
Number Scale
The numerical scale shows the comparison of distances on the map in numerical calculations. This scale is most commonly encountered in map compilations.
For example, on a map it is written on a scale of 1: 1,000,000. This means that every 1 unit distance on the map is equivalent to the same 1,000,000 unit distance on the actual distance.
Suppose the unit used is cm, then 1: 1,000,000 means that every 1 cm distance on the map represents a distance of 1,000,000 cm or 10,000 meters or 10 km in the actual area.
This type of scale using cm units has been used as the official international map scale system. However, there are also some countries that use inches to miles. Some of these countries include the United Kingdom and the British Commonwealth of Nations.
Bar Scale or Graphical Scale
Bar scales use straight line rods that have several segments with equal distances between them, much like a number line. The scale can also be in the form of graphics (photos) that display the distance between sections.
