Wrist Bone: Anatomy, Function and Disorders

Wrist Bone: Anatomy, Function and Disorders – On this occasion About the knowledge.co.id will discuss about the Wrist Bone and of course other things that also cover it. Let's look at the discussion together in the article below to better understand it.

Wrist Bone: Anatomy, Function and Disorders

The body has 206 bones. Bones have several functions, such as support, protection, transport, storage of minerals, and formation of blood cells. The arrangement of the bones that form joints and the muscle attachments to these bones determine movement. Bones are classified based on their shape into four groups: long bones, short bones, flat bones, and irregular bones.

The anatomical structure of the hand consists of several bones consisting of 27 bones divided into three groups namely carpals, metacarpals, and phalanges. Carpals are the bones that form the wrist which helps the movement of supination and pronation of the wrist where the carpals consist of 8 pieces.

The wrist bones are the bones that are in the wrist and elbow area and have the muscles to move the hand.

This bone belongs to the type of short bones or carpals. As the name suggests, this bone is round and short. For example, similar to the wrist bones, short bones are also found in the ankle bones and vertebrae.

The wrist is made up of eight short bones which are a type of hard bone. The wrist bones are formed from bone cells that have haversian canals filled with blood vessels.

The strong and sturdy wrist bone structure contains compounds in the form of calcium carbonate and calcium phosphate which are obtained through the bloodstream.

Anatomy of the Wrist Bone

The wrist is the part of the bone that connects the palm to the arm. The wrist is made up of a series of joints, nerves, and bones including the radius and ulna bones (the long bones on the medial side of the forearm) bottom), the eight carpal bones (bones of the wrist), and the proximal ends of the five metacarpal bones (bones hand).

The following wrist anatomy:

  • Carpal Bones

The carpal bones (carpals) are the bones of the wrist which consist of 8 (eight) small bones. The function of the carpal bones is to connect the palm of the hand to the two long bones of the arm, namely the radius and ulna.

Here are the 8 (eight) carpal bones:

    • Scaphoid: Located under the thumb in a long boat-like shape.
    • Lunate: Located beside the scaphoid bone in a small crescent shape.
    • Trapezium: Located between the top of the scaphoid bone and below the thumb bone with a trapezoidal shape.
    • Trapezoid: Located beside the trapezium bone with a wedge-like shape.
    • Capitate: Located in the middle of the wrist with an oval-like shape.
    • Hamate: Located on the side of the little finger.
    • Triquetrum: Located under the hamate bone with a small pyramidal shape.
    • Pisiform: Located on top of the trapezium bone with a small round bone shape.

In short, the carpal bones are located on the back of the palm and wrist with small, square, oval and small triangular shapes. This arrangement of carpal bones makes your wrist flexible, strong, and able to help move the hand with the joints and the two large bones in the arm.

  • Wrist Joint

There are 3 (three) main joints in the wrist, namely:

    • Radiocarpal Joint: Connects between the fingers and forearm bones, located on the thumb side of the wrist.
    • Ulnocarpal Joint: Connects the ulna and the lunate and triquetrum bones of the wrist, located on the side of the little finger.
    • Distal Radioulnar Joint: Connects between the lower ends of the radius and ulna, located around the wrist.

The function of the wrist joint is to help connect the bones in the palm and forearm. Without this joint, you would not be able to make movements in your wrist such as gripping, touching, turning your hand, and so on.

Functions of the Wrist Bones

The wrist bones are also known as the carpal bones. There are three functions of the wrist bones as follows:

  • As a Hand Movement Tool

The wrist bone functions as a tool for moving the part of the hand with the help of muscles. The bones that make up the wrist have stiff joints that limit movement.

Meanwhile, there is a saddle joint that connects the wrist to the palm.

The movement of the wrist forms a vertical motion, namely flexion and extension. Flexion is a downward movement of the wrist and extension is a backward movement of the wrist.

  • Place of Attachment of Hand Muscles

Muscles are an important part to help move the hand. The muscles attached to the hand become motion sensors making it easier for us to move our hands.

There are two types of muscles in the wrist, namely extensor muscles and flexor muscles. These two types of muscles cause a wide range of motion which is assisted by stiff joints and saddle joints in the bony part of the wrist.

  • Connecting the Finger Bones and the Base of the Arm

The function of the wrist is used to connect the fingers at the lower end with the base of the arm. The arrangement of the wrist which consists of short bones and is round in shape forms the carpal so that it can connect the finger bones with the base of the arm.

Impaired Wrist Function

  • Sprains

A sprained wrist is a joint disorder that may occur when you stretch or carry something that is too heavy. This disorder also occurs due to damage to the surrounding ligaments. Generally, it occurs at the ulnocarpal joint which is located between the arm bones and the wrist bones.

  • Fracture

Fractures in the wrist are the most common bone disorder, usually occurring as a result of a fall, accident, or something else. The most common types of wrist fractures are distal radius fractures and scaphoid fractures.

  • Repetitive Injury

This condition usually occurs in repetitive activities where you don't stretch properly, such as sports activities, typing, writing, and so on. The most common symptoms are swelling, numbness and pain in the wrist.

  • Rheumatic Pain

Have you ever experienced rheumatic or arthritis pain in your wrist bones? This condition results from injury, inflexible joints, or an imbalance in the immune system. Common symptoms of arthritis are painful and stiff joints that interfere with your activities.
