Meaning of Noun

Noun is a noun which in Indonesian is marked by not being able to join the word not. An example is the word "house", a noun because it's impossible to say it's not a house. Nouns also have a good function for the subject or object of the clause. Semantically, a noun is a type of word that refers to objects, people, names, and many more which can then be objectified.

In terms of syntax

  • Derivative noun
    Derivative nouns are a form of derived nouns that go through a process of affixation, repetition or compounding.

Characteristics of Nouns (Nouns)

A noun or noun is a word that states a name or something that is considered an object. Nouns also have characteristics, the following are the characteristics of nouns:

  • Can be expanded by adding "the (+) adjective", for example, like "a beautiful house"
  • Canceled using the word instead. For example like "not a chair".
  • In a sentence this can be located as Subject (S) and Object (O). For example, like "Rani bought new clothes", in that sentence the words "Dodi" and "Shoes" are nouns.

Types of Nouns (Nouns)

The following are the kinds or types of nouns (nouns).

By Type

  • Concrete Nouns

A concrete noun is a noun that describes an object in which the word can be perceived (recognized) by the five senses. These concrete nouns can take the form of living things, inanimate objects, places or other things.

Examples of concrete nouns are as follows: Humans, Animals, Houses, Books, Paper and many more.

  • Abstract Nouns

Abstract nouns are nouns that cannot be captured or recognized by the five senses. Not only that, abstract nouns can also be in the form of a state, a name, an attribute, a measure, etc.

Examples of abstract nouns are as follows: Faith, Air, Knowledge, Kindness, Ideas, Honesty, Trust and many more.

Based on Formation

  • Basic Nouns

Basic Nouns are nouns that refer to the original identity or also the initial identity in something that can be objectified. Basic Nouns of this type cannot be translated or also translated into simpler forms.

Examples of Basic Nouns include: Books, Pens, Glasses, Spoons, Bottles, Knives and many more.

  • Derivative Nouns (Nouns).

Derivative nouns are types of nouns that are formed from basic nouns that go through a process of affixation, repetition or compounding.

The process of forming these derived nouns can occur in several ways, including:

Verbs (Verbs) + Affixes -an

Eat + an = Food
Drink + an = Drink
Wash + an = Laundry

Affix Pe- + Verb (Verb)

Pe + Sell = Seller
PE + Work = Workers
Pe + Sea = Sailor

Prefix Pe- + Adjective (Adjective)

Pe + Damage = Destroyer
Pe + Shame = Shy
Pe + Angry = Grumpy

Affix Pe- + Noun + Affix -an

Pe + House + an = Housing
Pe + Mountain + an = Mountains
Pe + Books + an = Bookkeeping

Usually there are 3 affixes that we can use in forming derived nouns, namely the affixes to-, Pe-, and -an. In its use, there can also be a change in the affixation according to the word to be formed. An example is the affix "pe-" to "pem" in the third example of point b4.

Noun Examples and Their Usage

As explained above, this noun is used as a subject (S) and object (O) in a sentence.

  • Budi buys vegetables.
  • Ani looks after the shop.

  • We will go to a housing.
  • The pen belonged to David.
  • The merchant was very friendly.

  • Cars can go faster than bicycles.
