Boyle's Law: Definition, Formulas, Applications and Examples of Problems
Let's discuss the meaning of Boyle's law first.
Boyle's law definition
Boyle's law is one of the laws of physics that discusses the relationship between pressure and volume in a gas. Robert Boyle was the inventor of Boyle's law in (1627-1691), he conducted a study in order to find out the relationship between pressure and gas volume at a constant temperature. From his research, Robert Boyle found that the product of pressure and volume of gas in a confined space is constant.
According to Wikipedia, another definition of Boyle's law is one of many chemical laws and a special case of an ideal chemical law. If the temperature remains constant in a closed system, Boyle's law explains the inverse relationship between absolute pressure and air volume.
Boyle's law, discovered by Robert Boyle, studies the effect of pressure on the volume of a gas at a constant temperature. Robert Boyle's statement is called Boyle's Law, and it reads:
"At constant temperature, the pressure of a gas in an enclosed space is inversely proportional to its volume."
In everyday life, we often encounter examples of tools that work based on Boyle's law, including bicycle pumps, syringes, and so on.
Boyle's Law formula
According to Boyle's law, this means that the product of pressure and volume of gas in a confined space is constant (fixed) at constant gas temperature conditions.
The above statement when written in the formula, namely:
P.V = C
Where C is a fixed number (constant). What if the pressure is changed then the amount of gas will also change, then the formula above can be written as follows:
P1. V1 = P2. V2
Under the condition:
P1 = initial gas pressure (atm.cm Hg, N/m2, Pa)
P2 = final gas pressure (atm, cm Hg, N/m2, Pa)
V1 = initial volume of gas (m3, cm3)
V2 = final gas volume (m3, cm3)
Boyle's law only applies when:
- The temperature of the gas is fixed or constant
- The gas is in a closed room
- No chemical reaction
- There is no change in gas state
Application of Boyle's Law
Boyle's law is applied to the working principle of the pump. Pump is a tool used to transport gas / liquid. According to this working principle, the pump is divided into two parts, namely the suction pump and the pressure pump.
After inhaling, the amount of air in the pump increases, and air cannot enter the tire because the air must enter through a valve (vent) made of rubber.
If the inlet hole is pressed, the amount of air in the pump will decrease, and due to the increased pressure, air may enter the tire through the ventilation tube. Similar devices that use Boyle's law are syringes, pipettes, pressure pumps, and water pumps.
Example of Boyle's Law Problem
The following is an example of a problem regarding Boyle's law:
1. The closed chamber has gas inside with a volume of 200 ml. If the room pressure is 60cmHg, then calculate the gas pressure in the room with a volume of 150 ml?
Completion:
Is known:
V1 = 200 ml
P1 = 60 cmHg
V2 = 150 ml
asked: P2…?
Answer:
The gas pressure in a room that has a volume of 250 ml according to Boyle's law is 80 cmHG.
2. In an enclosed space whose volume is 0.2 m3 filled with gas if the pressure is increased to 80,000 Pa?
Completion:
Is known:
P1 = 60,000 Pa
V1 = 0.2m3
P2 = 80,000 PaAsk: V2…?
Answer:
P1V1=P2 V2
V2 = (P1 V1): P2
V2 = (60,000 x 0.2): 80,000
V2 = 1,2/8
V2 = 0.15 m3 So, the gas volume becomes 0.15 M3
3. On Boyle's law, p. V = k, k has dimensions …
A Power
B. Business
C. Linear momentum
D. Temperature
E. Spring constant
Answer: B
Discussion :
Is known: V.p = k
asked: k = …?
Answer :
p.s. V = k
k = p. V = (m³)
k = N.m = Joules
The joule is the unit of work. So, k has a business dimension.
4. Among the following things, which are not a condition for the occurrence of Boyle's law are...
A Fixed temperature
B. Fixed volume and pressure
C. No chemical reaction occurs
D. Gas in closed space
E. The state of the gas does not change
Answer: B
Discussion :
Boyle's law only applies under certain conditions such as the temperature of the gas is constant, the gas is in a closed space, no chemical reactions occur, and no gas changes occur.
5. In a closed container, there is gas which expands so that its volume changes to 2 times its initial volume (V = initial volume, P = initial pressure). The gas pressure changes to...
Discussion
Is known :
Initial pressure (P1) = P
Initial volumes (V1) = V
final volumes (V2) = 2V
Asked: final pressure (P2)
Answer :
P1 V1 = P2 V2
P V = P2 (2V)
P = P2 (2)
P2 = P / 2 = ½ P
The gas pressure changes to ½ times the initial pressure.
6. In a closed container there is a gas which has a pressure of 2 atm and a volume of 1 liter. What if the gas pressure changes to 4 atm, the gas volume becomes...
Discussion
Is known :
Initial pressure (P1) = 2 atm = 2 x 105 Pascals
Final pressure (P2) = 4 atm = 4 x 105 Pascals
Initial volumes (V1) = 1 liter = 1 dm3 = 1 x 10-3 m3
Wanted: Final volume (V2)
Answer :
P1 V1 = P2 V2
(2 x 105)(1 x 10-3) = (4 x 105) V2
(1)(1 x 10-3) = (2) V2
1 x 10-3 = (2) V2
V2 = ½ x 10-3
V2 = 0.5 x 10-3 m3 = 0.5 dm3 = 0.5 liters
7. A closed room contains gas with a volume of 200 mL. What if the room pressure is 60 cmHg, so calculate the gas pressure in the room which has a volume of 150 mL?
Completion:
Is known:
V1 = 200 mL
V2 = 150 mL
P1 = 60 cmHg
Asked: P2 =…?
Answer:
P1. V1 = P2. V2
60 cmHg. 20 mL = P2. 15mL
P2 = 1200 cmHg/15
P2 = 80 cmHg
