Discussion on Code Mixing in Linguistics - A bilingual or multilingual speaker often encounters phenomenal problems in the use of elements of a particular language used in communication. This problem which is analyzed by linguists is a language problem about code mixing.

From the excerpt above, it can be defined that code mixing is the use of more than one language or code in one discourse. Chaer And Augustine (1995: 114) explains that code mixing is the use of two or more languages or two variants of a language in one speech community, where one is the the main code or basic code used which has its function and autonomy, while the other codes involved in speech events are only fragments just.

Discussion on Code Mixing in Linguistics

In code mixing there are fragments of one language used by a speaker, but basically the speaker uses a certain language. These language fragments can be phrases, words, or larger language units. From the definition above, it can be concluded that code mixing is the use of two or more languages by speakers in a conversation.

In daily communication, it is sometimes not realized that the frequent use of code mixing is in the form of inserting words, phrases or clauses used in communication. A speaker, for example, who inserts a lot of bits and pieces of his regional language into Indonesian, can already be said to be a code-mixing activity. As a result, a Javanese variety of Indonesian will appear (if the regional language used is Javanese) or Sundanese Indonesian will appear (if the local language used is Bahasa Sunda).

Thelander (in Chaer and Agustina, 2004:115) tries to explain the difference between code switching and code mixing. He said, if in a speech event there is a transition from one language clause to another language clause, then the event that occurs is code switching. However, if in a speech event, the clauses and phrases used consist of mixed clauses and phrases (hybrid clauses And hybrid phrases) and each clause or phrase no longer supports its own function, then what happens is code mixing.

Another opinion from Fasold (in Chaer and Agustina, 2004:115) offers grammatical criteria to distinguish code mixing and code switching. If someone uses one word or phrase from one language, then he has done code mixing., However if the next one is arranged according to the grammatical structure of another language then the event that occurs is a transfer code. Presumably in determining which language is classified as code mixing is a form of language variety which is a problem of language use. For this reason, it is necessary to study it again in language studies which are more focused on discussing the language problem.

From the three opinions above, that code mixing is a piece of language used by speakers in a conversation that is used consists of phrases and clauses that stand alone by using another language code, so that the speakers have mixed code.

Forms of Code Mixing

According to Suwito (1983:78-80) The form of code mixing is divided into six forms:

1. Insertion of elements in the form of words

The word is the smallest independent unit. An example of code mixing in the form of words is "mango often pretentious there are words as if the regional language is not important”.

2. Insertion of elements in the form of phrases

Phrase is a grammatical unit in the form of a combination of words that are non-predicative and its constituent must be a free morpheme. An example of code mixing in the form of a phrase insert is “Well, because I have nice kadhung with him, yes not signed".

3. Insertion of elements in the form of baster

Baster is the result of a combination of two different language elements and forms one meaning. An example of code mixing in the form of inserts in the baster form is "Many night clap which must be closed.”

4. Insertion of elements in the form of word repetition

Repetition of words is the repetition of grammatical units, either in whole or in part, whether with or without vowel variations. An example of code mixing in the form of word repetition is “I do maybe of course, as long as he doesn't ask around Again".

5. Insertion of elements in the form of idioms

Idiom is a construction of elements that choose each other, each member has a meaning that exists only because it is with the others. An example of code mixing in the form of idiomatic inserts is "At this time we should avoid working slowly from the joke“.

6. Insertion of elements in the form of clauses

A clause is a grammatical unit in the form of a group of words which at least consists of a subject and a predicate, and has the potential to become a sentence. An example of code mixing in the form of clause inserts is "A wise leader will always act ing ngarsa sung tuladha, ing madya mangun karsa, tut wuri handayani.
