Describe Tracheal Structure: Definition, Function, and Disorders of the Trachea
The trachea is tubular and formed from 16 to 20 cartilaginous rings that are shaped like the letter C. However, this ring is not circular because the ends do not come together due to the attachment of the esophagus to the tracheal wall. This is also so that the trachea remains open and makes a slight change in diameter when needed so that the incoming and outgoing air remains smooth. The rings are held together by fibrous tissue.
The trachea is strong but flexible. The trachea is composed of ciliated epithelium which has goblet cells, these goblet cells will produce a thick liquid/mucus (mucus) that protects the tracheal walls. When approaching the lungs, the tracheal structure forms two branches, namely the left and right and will be directly related to the bronchial alveoli and the lungs.
The wall of the trachea consists of three layers, namely the inner layer (mucous tissue), the middle layer (muscle and cartilage tissue), and the outer layer (connective tissue).
Inner Layer (Mucosa Tissue)
The inner lining of the trachea is composed of ciliated columnar epithelial cells with goblet cells. This layer functions to produce mucus or thick liquid (mucus) which will protect the walls of the trachea and protect the respiratory tract from bacteria, dirt and dust.
Middle Layer (Muscle Tissue and Cartilage)
The middle layer or cartilage is the layer where the C-shaped cartilage lies. Part of this cartilage is on the posterior or back which is where the trachea meets the esophagus.
Around the cartilage ring there is muscle tissue in the form of smooth muscle, its function is to move breathing, control coughing and gagging reflexes. In this layer there is also a structure that connects the tracheal cartilage rings and protects the two ends of the ring so that it remains in its optimal state.
Adventitia Outer Layer (Connective Tissue)
The outermost layer composed by connective tissue. In this layer can also be found nerves, blood vessels and fat tissue.
Meanwhile, there are also those who say that the tracheal wall consists of four layers. If so, what is meant by the 4th layer, namely the submucosal layer which is located after the mucosal layer. The submucosa layer is composed of connective tissue separated from the epithelium in the mucosal layer. This layer contains many blood vessels and nerves. This layer allows movement of the tracheal mucosa.
Trachea meaning
The trachea or windpipe is part of the respiratory system in the form of a tube having a diameter of about 20 to 25 mm and a length of about 10-16 cm. The trachea is an elongated tube composed of 20 strong but flexible ring-shaped cartilages. The trachea is located adjacent to the esophagus, namely the respiratory tract.
The trachea is located after the larynx and before the bronchi and is adjacent to the esophagus. The trachea is an organ that functions to channel air into the bronchi and alveoli while at the same time filtering dust or dirt in the air. The trachea in Indonesian is often called the trachea. If there is an obstruction in the trachea, it will be a problem with the esophagus that is attached to it. For example, if there is an obstruction in the airway, they will choke, causing a cough reflex so that the trachea and esophagus are clear again of the foreign objects that had blocked them.

If a foreign object enters through the respiratory tract and reaches the trachea, it will be trapped and attached to the sticky tracheal mucus. then the object or dirt will be removed from the body in the form of phlegm (because it is mixed with tracheal mucus).
