Periodization is a chapter in history. In general, this historical periodization is based on an incident that has an actual nature or at certain moments.

In this case periodization is used in order to facilitate understanding and discussion of the history of human life. Many researchers make periodizations so that they have different views on history and have subjective characteristics that are influenced by the subject matter and research.

Periodization of Indonesian History

There are several historical periods in Indonesia where the periodization is divided into 2 (two), namely the pre-literary era and the historical era.

  • Pre-literate Age

The pre-literate era is the era before humans recognize writing. Based on this history, it can be learned from the form of remains of ancient objects in the form of features, sites, artifacts and ecofacts. Artifacts are all objects that clearly show a partial work or clear objects showing a work of part or all, namely as the alteration of natural resources by hand man. Features are artifacts that cannot be moved without destroying their place. Ecofacts are objects made up of biotic or abiotic environmental elements. The site is a plot of land which contains ancient relics.

  • Age of History

In this case the historical era is the era when humans are familiar with writing. The historical era is divided into three, namely the ancient era, the new Indonesian era and the modern Indonesian era. For more details, see the explanation below:

  • Ancient Times

Antiquity is the era that speaks from the oldest kingdom to the 14th century. Where in this era developed Indonesian culture influenced by Hinduism and Buddhism.

  • New Indonesian Age

The new Indonesian era which began in the 15th century where it talked about the period of development of Islamic culture until the 18th century.

  • Modern Indonesian Era

The modern Indonesian era, which occurred since the reign of the Dutch East Indies (1800), the movement for independence from Indonesia to independence until now or the contemporary period. There are several elements that often influence the preparation of historical periods, one of which is geography. This happened because of the old buildings being rehabilitated, changes in boundaries, changes in flora and fauna, changes in river flow which can obscure the traces of history.

Periodization Concept

The following are some of the concepts of periodization that were discussed in the 1957 First National History Seminar with the results, namely:

  • Periodization Concept Prof. Dr. Soekarno

According to Dr. Soekanto, this periodization should be based on state administration, meaning it is political. The distribution of periodization based on reality should be as exact as possible as well as practical. According to Dr. Soekanto, the periodization of Indonesian history is proposed chronologically as follows:

  • At the base of history (- 0)
  • During the Kutai-Tarumanegara Period (0-600).
  • During the Sriwijaya-Medang-Singosari Period (600-1300)
  • During the Majapahit Period (1300-1500)
  • During the Islamic Empire Period (1500-1600).
  • During the Aceh Period, Mataram, Makassar (1600-1700)
  • During the Period of foreign governments (1700-1945)
  • During the Company Age (1800-1808)
  • During the Daendels Age (1808-1811).
  • In the Age of British Government (1811-1816)
  • During the Nederlands – India Period (1816-1942)
  • During the Nippon Period (1942-1945).
  • During the Republic of Indonesia Period (1945-present).
  • Periodization Concept Prof. Dr. Sartono Kartodirdjo

According to Prof. Dr. Sartono Kartodirdjo, as the basis for periodization, is the degree of integration achieved in Indonesia in the past. According to his point of view, the economic factor greatly influences social, political and cultural developments in Indonesia.

These economic factors affect Indonesia's contacts with foreign countries which bring foreign cultural influences, both Hindu culture from India, Islamic culture from West Asia, and western culture either from Europe or other countries other.

So it is possible to distinguish between two major periods, namely Hindu influence and Islamic influence. The designation of this period uses the name of the kingdom because the nature of society at that time was still homogeneous and centered on the king (palace centric).

The following is the periodization proposed by Prof. Dr. Sartono Kartodirdjo, among others:

Prehistoric

  • Ancient Times
  • The period of the oldest kingdoms
  • Sriwijaya period (from the VII-XIII or XIV centuries).
  • Majapahit Period (from XIV-XV centuries).

New Age

  • Aceh, Mataram, Makassar/Ternate/Tidore period (since the XVI century).
  • The period of resistance to Western imperialism (XIX century).
  • The period of the national movement (XX century).
  • Period of the Republic of Indonesia (since 1945).

Example Periodization

The following are some examples of periodization, among others, namely:

Exemplary Pembakan based on Ir. Sukarno in his book entitled "Indonesia Claims" distinguished by:

  • Glorious past
  • The present is bleak
  • Brilliant times to come.

An example of Indonesian history narration according to Prof. Mr. M Yamin who is known as "Panca Warsa" includes:

  • Prehistory of Indonesia ( – 0 AD)
  • Indonesian Protohistory (0 – 600 AD).
  • National Stage (Colonial Age (600 -1525 AD)
  • Babakan between Nations (International Age (1525 -1900 AD).
  • Age of Proclamation (1900 -1945 AD).

Thus the explanation about Definition of Periodization, Concept, Purpose, Benefits and Examples, hopefully it can be useful and add to your insight.
