Examples of Ovoviviparous Animals: Definition, Characteristics and Explanations
Examples of Ovoviviparous Animals: Definition, Characteristics and Explanations – What are some examples of ovoviviparous animals? On this occasion About the knowledge.co.id will discuss Ovoviviparous animals and things about them. Let's look at the discussion in the article below to understand it better.
Examples of Ovoviviparous Animals: Definition, Characteristics and Explanations
There are 3 types of animal breeding development, namely viviparous, oviparous, and ovoviviparous. In general, ovoviviparous animals are animals that reproduce in two ways, namely laying eggs (oviparous) and giving birth (viviparous). So in short ovoviviparous are animals whose way of reproduction is by laying eggs and giving birth or giving birth.
Living things that reproduce by Ovovivipar, produce eggs (lay eggs), and then the eggs remain inside its mother's body until it hatches, then the mother will remove it by giving birth or giving birth in the form of a new individual of the same type.
Characteristics of Ovoviviparous Animals
The special feature of ovoviviparous animals is the way they reproduce by laying eggs and giving birth. In addition to these special features, there are also other features as follows:
- The process of fertilization of ovoviviparous animals from becoming an egg to hatching occurs inside the mother's body, then it will be released into a child.
- The process of reproduction occurs generatively or sexually. From this generative or sexual reproduction process will produce a zygote. Then the zygote from the female will meet with the male sperm in the female ovum.
- The period of embryo development in ovoviviparous animals depends on the environmental conditions that exist in the mother's body. While the time that will be needed by new individuals depends on the surrounding environment. This is because the eggs of ovoviviparous animals have left the mother's body.
Ovoviviparous Animals and Their Explanations
Shark
Sharks are the most ferocious and feared marine predators. This is caused by sharks that can prey on fish whose body shape is smaller than them.
For how to breed sharks is to store eggs in their bodies. The eggs are the result of fertilization that occurs in the fish.
Shark breeding is almost the same as stingrays. However, there is still no reliable information about how long it takes for sharks to conceive their young.
During one pregnancy, sharks will produce 5 to 20 potential children
Stingray
Is one of the largest species in the world, the width of its body size from the tip of the fin to the tip of the other fins can reach 7 meters.
In the breeding process, male and female stingrays will carry out fertilization which will later produce an egg. Then the eggs will not be directly removed and left to hatch just like that.
However, the egg will be stored in the mother's body, until the embryo grows and develops in the womb at its optimal point. When it reaches the optimal point, then the eggs will be removed from the mother's stomach.
There is one thing that is unique about these stingrays, that is, at the fertilization stage, they only need a fairly short time, only about 90 seconds. As for the gestation period, stingrays need about 9-12 months.
In one pregnancy, stingrays can produce 5-9 potential children
Guppies
Guppy fish is one of the most famous fresh fish species in the world. Guppies are very easy to adapt and fast to reproduce. In various places in Indonesia, this fish has become a wild fish that fills ditches and ditches.
This fish can reproduce in about 21 to 30 days depending on the temperature of the water used. Each guppy fish breeder can produce between 10 and 100 fry or candidates for each period.
Chameleon
Not all types of chameleons breed ovoviviparally, some breed by directly removing their eggs. Chameleons are indeed a unique type of animal, because they can change their body color according to the area they occupy. Chameleons need a period of about 5 to 6 weeks for the hatching process.
iguanas
Iguana is a type of animal that is still in the same genus as lizards in the tropics of Central America, South America and the Caribbean islands. These lizards were first described by an Austrian zoologist, Josephus Nicolaus Laurenti in 1768.
In the process of breeding, healthy adult iguanas may be able to start laying even in the absence of a male iguana to fertilize the eggs.
Generally, female green iguanas become adults when they are about two or four years old. It is at this time that follicles begin to develop in the ovaries. Each iguana follicle is made up of tiny eggs.
Egg-laying or pregnant female iguanas usually don't eat for 3 to 6 weeks before they lay their eggs. This is normal, because the iguana's stomach is full of eggs in the oviducts and the stomach is quite compressed. This causes only a small amount of space left in the iguana's body to accommodate food.

Lizard
Lizards or bengkarung are a type of scaly, four-legged reptile animal that is widespread in the world. Scientifically, this lizard is known as a sub-order or child of the Lacertilia nation which is a member of the reptile nation with scales just like snakes.
Lizards generally reproduce by laying eggs, but there are also types of lizards that reproduce by ovoviviparity. For lizard pregnancy cycle is almost the same as iguana, the period is the same, namely 90-100 days.
However, there are fundamental differences between the reproduction of lizards and iguanas. Female iguanas are not approached by anyone and tend to be more aggressive, they are more alone when they are pregnant. As for the lizards, they would actually protect each other. There are even times when the baby is about to come out, the male will always protect it and act aggressively.
Salamenders
The term salamender is the common name for about 550 species of amphibians. In general, the appearance of this salamander is similar to that of a lizard with a slender body, a short nose and a long tail.
For salamender breeding is done internally, where the male will produce sperm containing spermatophore. It is this sperm of the male that will later be accommodated by the female salamender in the cloaca.
The cloaca is the opening of the salamander's urinary, genital and digestive (urogenital) tracts. When the female egg is fertilized by the male sperm, it forms an egg. The eggs will be laid in the water or on land. This is because salamenders, like other amphibian species, lay their eggs in water.
You need to know that salamender eggs do not have protective cells like chicken eggs. It also makes salamender eggs vulnerable to chemical pollutants, ultraviolet radiation, and other factors that interfere with cell division in the early stages of the embryo. The result is that the embryo will not be able to develop properly and may experience death.
Seahorses
Sea horse is a type of fish that lives in the sea from the genus Hippocampus and the family Syngnathidae.
Seahorses have body sizes that vary from 16 mm to 35 cm, and can be found in tropical and temperate waters all over the world. Seahorses are the only species where the male can become pregnant.
This type of male seahorse has a pouch like a kangaroo which is in the can on its body. This sac is used to store and incubate egg cells that are ready to be fertilized.
Thus, fertilization will occur when the female has ripe donads and is ready to be distributed to the male's pouch. The number of eggs that can be produced in one pregnancy is around 50 to 200 eggs, depending on the size and age of the sea horse itself.
In the process of pregnancy, seahorse takes only about 10 to 14 days.
Platypus
The platypus is one of the native animals from the Australian region which reproduces by laying eggs and giving birth. Therefore this platypus animal is included in the example of ovoviviparous animals.
Many people say that the platypus is a strange animal, because this animal has four legs and has a beak like a duck. For the inside of the body is more similar to the type of reptiles, but these animals suckle and lay eggs.
The platypus animal is an example of an animal that evolved from the aves class into a mammal. Even though they belong to the class of mammals, they also reproduce by laying eggs too.
The platypus reproductive cycle is the same as the animals I have described above. So, when fertilization has occurred, the embryo will develop inside the egg and take nutrition from some of their yolk.
For the development of embryos from platypus animals, it is classified as very fast. They only take about 10 to 14 days to conceive their young.
Boa
The boa constrictor is a primitive species that is distributed throughout most of the tropical regions of South America, Central America, and also the Caribbean islands.
Although in general snakes reproduce by laying eggs, it is different from the type of boa constrictor. Boas will be more aggressive when mating season arrives.
Boas are ready to mate when they are 2 to 3 years old. When fertilization has occurred, the egg will be deposited first in the body of the female boa constrictor and the egg will also hatch in it.
In one gestation, boas will produce about 10 to 40 eggs. A small boa constrictor will be about 50 to 60 cm in length. The time it takes to conceive is 6 months.
Sea Wreck Snake
The sea carrion snake, also known as the green snake, is a dangerous snake, because its venom is very deadly. This snake has a body length of about 100 cm for males, and 80 cm for females, but they have a short tail. This sea carcass snake will generally move at night to find its prey.
This snake is different from snakes in general, which move very nimbly. The movement of this snake is very slow when compared to other normal snakes. When the mating season arrives, female snakes will be more aggressive than males.
The breeding of sea carrion snakes is the same as for boas, except that there is no reliable information about their pregnancy. Meanwhile, at one time of pregnancy, this snake will produce 20 to 70 snakes.
Anaconda
Anaconda is a large group of snakes that live in fresh waters and rivers in tropical South America. Anaconda has the ability to wrap around its prey very strongly and has very fast movements.
In terms of breeding, anacondas will usually do marriage when the mating season comes. Where at that time the female was very aggressive just like other female snakes.
In one pregnancy, anacondas can produce 20 to 100 of their future babies. However, the period for containing an anaconda is quite long, which is around 6 to 7 months.
