Understanding the definition is a statement that describes or explains the meaning of a word as well as expressions that limit the meaning of a word or expression.
Understanding Definitions in General
Understanding Definition is a limitation or meaning, it can also be interpreted by words, phrases, or sentences that expresses the meaning, description, or main characteristic of a person, thing, process, or activities/activities.
This definition comes from the Latin word definitio which means "determination of meaning" or "limitation". It can be said that the word or expression to be explained is called the definiendum, while the part that explains the definiendum is called the definiens.
Definition Outline
This definition can be categorized into 2 (two) outlines, namely the nominal (verbal) definition and also the real definition.
Nominal Definition
The nominal definition consists of a general nominal definition and a special nominal definition.
real definition
The real definition consists of the real essential definition and the real descriptive definition. These real essential definitions can be subdivided into physical essential real definitions as well as metaphysical essential real definitions. This real descriptive definition can be subdivided into a causal real descriptive definition, a real genetic definition, and an accidental real descriptive definition.
Types of Definitions
The following definitions are divided into several types, including the following:
Nominal definition or verbal definition
Nominal definition or verbal definition is the simplest definition and has a provisional nature because it only gives etymological explanations or gives synonyms for the terms you want to use explained.
This nominal definition does not give an essential understanding of something that is explained. An example of a nominal definition providing an etymological explanation: Logic is a term taken from the Greek word logicos, which is formed from the noun logos, which has the meaning "something that is expressed, a rational consideration, conversation, word," or "expression through Language".
An example of a nominal definition giving the synonym definiendum:
Servant is a slave or servant.
Arca is a statue.
Note: All kinds of dictionaries are basically nominal definitions.
Common nominal definition
A general nominal definition is a definition that is generally accepted by everyone, which provides an explanation of a word or expression with something that is in accordance with general understanding.
Examples of common nominal definitions:
Husband is a married man
Special nominal definition
A special nominal definition is a definition that has a relative nature and is often also subjective. Therefore, it is not generally accepted, or even though it is commonly known, the word or expression has different meanings.
Examples of Nominal Definitions: the word or expression "free", "gotong royong", and so on.
real definition
The real definition can be considered synonymous with the analytical definition or also the explicative definition. The real definition can be divided into essential definitions as well as descriptive definitions.
Essential definition
The essential definition is the definition that really can give an essential understanding of something to be explained. The essential definition is an explanation through the description of the essential parts of something.
The principle of formulating the essential definition, namely pergenus et differentiam, is the formulation of the definition of the genus proximum (proximate genus) and differentia specifica.
This essential definition is then subdivided into a physical essential definition and a metaphysical essential definition.
- Physical Essential Definition
The essential physical definition is an explanation that refers to the description of the parts that embody the essence of something that becomes the definiendum.
Examples of Physical Essential Definitions:
Humans are rational animals that consist of a body and a soul.
- Essential Metaphysical Definitions
The Metaphysical Essential definition is the most ideal definition, which actually consists of the genus proximum as well as differentia specifica.
An example of the Essential Metaphysical Definition by Aristotle:
Homo est animal rationale which means human is a rational animal.
Descriptive Definitions
Descriptive definition is an explanation that refers to a description of the special characteristics possessed by something that is described.
This descriptive definition can be further distinguished into causal definitions, genetic definitions, and also accidental definitions.
- Causal definition
A causal definition is a definition that explains the causes and effects of something that becomes a definiendum.
Examples of Causal Definitions:
The pen is a human-made tool for writing.
- Genetic definition
The genetic definition is a definition that gives an explanation of the origin or describes how something happened.
Examples of Genetic Definitions:
Clouds are water vapor that evaporates into the air due to the warming of the sea which is illuminated by the sun
- Accidental definition
The definition of accidental is the definition compiled from the genus proximum and accidentia.
So it can be interpreted that an accidental definition is a definition that mentions all the accidental characteristics of something that becomes the definiendum.
Examples of Accidential Definitions
Elephants are four-legged animals that have trunks, smooth hair, have two ears, have very large body sizes, and so on.
