Definition of BIOS [Basic Input Output System]
Bios or stands for Basic Input Output System is a program written in assembly language that has the task of managing the function of the hardware on a computer/PC, notebook. Bios is located inside the memory chip which here is ROM (Read Only Memory) or made from flash memory CMOS (Complimentari Metal Oxide Semiconductor) contained in the mainboard or motherboard computer.
In general, easy to call a battery cmos. The cmos battery is attached to the mainboard/motherboard. This battery has the function of setting the date and maintaining the settings that have been set by the user or computer user so that there are no errors even though the computer is turned off. This also applies to all laptops, notebooks which also have a CMOS battery in them. But when it comes to computers, the CMOS battery is bigger and easier to replace when it's used up.
The BIOS has an important function on a computer, namely loading the operating system or OS which is often referred to as the Boot. In addition, the Bios is also responsible for providing instructions on the microprocessor to turn on the computer. An example of an instruction commanded by the BIOS on a microprocessor is POST (Power Self On Test) whose function is to test the operating status of all hardware/hardware on the computer.
Another instruction given by the Bios to the microprocessor is to activate the BIOS chip which is found in several other components on the computer, such as SCSI and cards VGA or graphics card, manages and checks computer peripherals during the startup process. Another thing the microprocessor does is manage the date/clock, hard disk and other settings. Besides that, the BIOS also identifies all ATA or SATA drives, whether they are properly installed and then displays them on the start up screen.
This identifier includes the drive's model number, make, capacity, and transfer mode. To enter the BIOS on a computer or laptop, simply press the F1 and F2 keys on the computer keyboard.
BIOS function
The BIOS has a function to provide instructions with the term Power On Self Test (POST), which is a command to identify and initialize devices hardware such as CPU, VGA Card, RAM or memory, Keyboard, Mouse, CD / DVD Drive, Hard drive, and other components on the computer during the boot process going on.
Another function of the BIOS is to set basic configurations on computers based on their respective functions. This setting is usually used to improve computer performance or what is often referred to as overclocking.
The next function is the BIOS provides basic information on the computer. The BIOS here is tasked with providing basic information about how the interactions on each important device work contained on the computer, such as the drive and memory which will be in charge when loading the system operation.
How BIOS Works
The way the BIOS works is starting from the initialization process, in which process we can see the amount of memory installed, the type of hard disk and its capacity and so on. The BIOS will search for, initialize and display any information via the graphics card or VGA card on the computer.
After that, Bios will check for other ROM devices on the hard drive to further test the RAM. After all the components tested have been completed, the BIOS will look for the location of the boot device and also the operating system or OS.
