Consumer behavior is a process carried out by individuals or groups in all respects for example buying, searching, appraising and using to make a product that has gone through a process consumption.

Consumer behavior will be seen before making a purchase to making a purchase and also after the purchase. All activities or activities in which there are three phases are called consumer behavior.

What consumers do before making a purchase is looking for a lot of information about the product they want to buy, meanwhile in the buying phase, consumers make transactions by buying the desired product, and for the after-purchase phase the activity carried out by a consumer is to conduct an assessment, use the product and also dispose of products that are not needed.

The theory of consumer behavior is applied in the explanation and forecasting of products that will be chosen by consumers (households), at certain levels of income and prices. In addition, this theory is also used to obtain the demand curve.

3. Shiffman and Kanuk (2000)

The definition of consumer behavior according to Shiffman and Kanuk is the process a person goes through in searching, buying, use, evaluate and act after consumption of products, services or ideas that are expected to fulfill his needs.

Scope of Consumer Behavior

The scope of consumer behavior includes what products they buy, what reasons they buy the product. When is a good time to buy the product, and also where is the right place to buy the product and how long do they buy it and also how long do they use it.

Consumer Behavior Theory

The theory of consumer behavior reads:

"How can an individual or group with the income they earn for a certain period of time and that income be able to buy various types of products both goods and services so that a certain satisfaction is achieved as expected by consumer"

Consumer Behavior Approach

There are two approaches to consumer behavior, namely the cardinal approach and the ordinal approach.

Cardinal Approach

The cardinal approach is an approach that contains consumer analysis based on the same assumptions states that, the level of satisfaction obtained by consumers can be measured with certain units, such as the amount and price.

The cardinal approach is often called marginal efficiency. In the cardinal approach there are several points that must be considered, including:

  • Unit of measurement can be used to measure consumer satisfaction
  • The amount of goods consumed is directly proportional to consumer satisfaction, meaning that the more goods consumed, the greater the level of consumer satisfaction.
  • Gossen's law occurs in consumer behavior, which means that there is a decrease in the level of customer satisfaction
  • The level of satisfaction is directly proportional to the price of a product. This means that when consumers want to obtain a high level of satisfaction, they must be willing to spend a lot of money. and vice versa when consumers only want to spend a little money then the level of satisfaction will also not be increase.

Ordinal Approach

The ordinal approach is an approach that functions to measure customer satisfaction with ordinal or relative numbers. In the ordinal approach, it is not necessary to measure the usability of an item, it is enough to know it and consumers can make a high order of low the usefulness that is obtained from consuming a group goods.

The level of customer satisfaction can be calculated using an indifference curve which has the following characteristics:

  • It has a negative slope, this means that consumers tend to reduce their consumption of one object when the number of other objects consumed increases.
  • The curve tends to be convex towards the origin, it gives the impression that a difference between the number of proportions must be consumers sacrifice to change the combination of the amount of each item they consume or also called the marginal rate of substitution.
