Definition of Meteor, Characteristics, Examples and Explanations
If you look at it in terms of geography that there are celestial bodies and many kinds. One of these celestial bodies that we usually hear about is meteors. Most people think that meteors are celestial bodies that have fallen to earth and those that have not yet fallen are called meteoroids. This can be considered not completely wrong and completely right.
Meaning of Meteors
Meteors are the appearance of the path of a meteoroid falling into the earth's atmosphere, which is generally called a shooting star. This is not only the designation of a celestial body meteor that has fallen to earth, but the appearance of its path when it enters the earth's atmosphere.
The appearance occurred due to the path of the meteoroid fall into the earth's atmosphere caused by the heat generated from the ram pressure. If anyone thinks that there is friction in the atmosphere or air, don't blame it. This is an assumption before the ram pressure theory. What is ram pressure? Here's an explanation.
In physics, ram pressure can be described as the pressure exerted by an object moving at supersonic speeds in a fluid medium (such as a liquid or gas). The ram pressure can produce a large drag force on the falling object, in this case, a meteoroid.
Ram pressure can cause meteoroids to fall and appear to glow as they fall. Where when the fall of a high-speed meteoroid enters the atmosphere which produces a very large air pressure compared to the front of the meteoroid. This pressure heats the air which in turn heats up the meteoroids so that meteoroids burn which are known as shooting stars.
Meteors Traits
If you look visually, of course, meteors have the characteristics of shining brightly, like shooting stars that are small in size. If a meteoroid that falls into the atmosphere is not used up and can reach the surface of the earth, then the object is called a meteorite.
If you look at the order before the meteor, it is called a meteoroid, which is a celestial body that is smaller than an asteroid. Meteoroids that enter the Earth's atmosphere are called meteors (appearance of long paths marked by falling light). When the meteoroids are not used up in the atmosphere and reach the earth's surface, they are called meteorites.
Meteors Type
According to Wikipedia, Meteorites (meteoroids that reach the earth) can be grouped into 3 (three) types, namely:
Iron
Based on the composition of the meteor that was found consisting of a crystalline iron-nickel alloy. Meteorites are just like the outer core of the earth which is what scientists believe. Judging from the number found, iron meteorites account for around 4.8% of the total meteorites found.
Stony
Stone meteorites or stony which are the most common types found and have different varieties. Stony meteorites can be divided into 3 sub-classifications.
- Chondrites that contain chondrules.
- Carbonate chondrites, which contain chondrules along with volatile minerals.
- Achondrites that do not contain chondroles.
Meteorites of this type account for about 94% of those found.
Stony-Iron
This type of meteorite is very rare to find, because it contains rocks and iron, aka a mixture of Stony-Iron. This species occupies about 1.2% of those found.
