If in EYD, sentences that contain pleonasm will be considered as sentences that are not effective. How come? Yes, because if we use pleonasm in a sentence, then in that sentence there is a waste of words.

So, the pleonasm figure of speech is rarely used in official or unofficial letters. More often used in everyday communication and also in a literary work such as theatre, drama, pantun, poetry, and so forth.

Characteristics and Causes of Sentences Said Pleonasm

After knowing what a pleonasm figure of speech is, here are six reasons for the occurrence (as well as features or characteristics) of pleonasstic sentences:

  • In one phrase there are two or more words that are synonymous (similarities)

For example:

    • Starting from small he was naughty.
    • For the sake of his lover, he would do anything

Explanation :

In the first sentence above "begin" has the same meaning as "from". Thus, sentence (a) should only be said: Starting small he was naughty or From childhood he was naughty.
In the second sentence "by" has the same meaning as "for". Thus, sentence (b) should be able to say: For the sake of his lover, he would do anything or For his lover, he would do anything.

  • The plural form is expressed twice

For example:

    • I have read all of these books.
    • The students attended the flag ceremony.

Explanation :

The word all has many meanings. In accordance with the rules of the Indonesian language, all nouns that come after the word should not be in the plural form. So sentence (a) is sufficient to say: I have read all of these books or I have read all of these books.
The word para already contains many meanings. So sentence (b) can be said: Students take part in the flag ceremony or Students take part in the flag ceremony

  • The meaning of a word is already contained in the other words that make up the phrase.

For example:

    • Andy came downstairs.
    • Nani goes upstairs.

Explanation :

The word "down" also has the same meaning as down. So sentence (a) can be said: Andi goes down or Andi goes down
The word "up" also has the same meaning as up. So sentence (b) can be said: Nani goes up or Nani goes up.

  • The plural marker is followed by a plural noun

For example:

    • Various kinds of fruit are sold in the market.
    • Various types of vegetables are grown in the fields.

Explanation :

The word "assorted" means the same as "assorted". Therefore, in a sentence it is sufficient to use only one. Therefore sentence (a) can be said: Various fruits are sold in the market, or Various kinds of fruit are sold in the market.
Likewise "various" means exactly the same as "many kinds". Therefore in a sentence it is sufficient to use only one. So sentence (b) is sufficient to say: Various vegetables are grown in the rice fields or Various types of vegetables are planted in the rice fields.

  • One element of the abbreviation has been stated in full

For example:

    • Square Bali FC won the game.
    • The Golkar party association won the election.

Explanation :

The acronym "Square" stands for the Gianyar football union. But on the other hand "FC" stands for football club which means football union. So there are two similar phrases in which a larger phrase is used.
The acronym "Golkar" stands for the working group party, while the word group is synonymous with "association" or also with "party". So there are three phrases that are the same in the sentence used phrases that may be larger.

  • Hyponym

For example:

    • They keep various birds, such as parrots, canaries, and rowo birds.
    • My father planted various vegetables, such as spinach, carrots and kale.

Explanation :

The words parrot, canary, and rowo cucak are hyponyms for bird species. So it's enough just to say the first sentence: They keep a variety of birds such as parrots, canaries and rowo cucak.
The words spinach, carrots and kale are hyponyms for types of vegetables. So the second sentence is enough just to say: Father grows various vegetables, such as spinach, carrots and kale.

Pension time

When age is getting old
That's when it gets blinder

When old days come
And it will hit everyone
