Metaphors are: Characteristics, Forms, Types and Examples
Metaphor Figures are: Characteristics, Forms, Types and Examples – What is a Metaphor? Metaphor is used to describe something as if it were something else. On this occasion About the knowledge.co.id will discuss whether it is a Figure of Metaphor and the things that surround it. Let's look at the discussion together in the article below to better understand it.
Metaphor Figures are: Characteristics, Forms, Types and Examples
Metaphor is a figure of speech that describes something by direct and precise comparison on the basis of almost the same or even the same characteristics. Metaphoric figures of speech are also known as equations or comparisons.
In equating or comparing something, metaphorical figures of speech do not use connecting words. For example like, like, like, and so on. However, go straight to or use the figurative word.
Etymologically (language) the term figurative language metaphor comes from Indonesian, namely figurative language which functions to express indirectly in the form of an analogical comparison.
According to the Big Indonesian Dictionary (KBBI) the term Majas means figurative language (imaginative) and expressive, while metaphor means an indirect expression in the form of a comparison Analogical.
According to Tarigan, (1985: 15) Figure of speech is a form of figurative language, which clearly describes a picture that is formed through comparison or contrast in a literary work.
According to Keraf, (1981: 124), Metaphor is a form of figurative language, which contains an implied comparison in equating one thing with another.
Characteristics of Figure of Speech Metaphor
In the form of Figure of speech the related metaphor has a characteristic that distinguishes it from other forms of figure of speech, the following explanation is provided below:
- Metaphor is included in the type of comparative figure of speech
- Figure of speech Metaphor has words or phrases that are formed into imaginative sentences
- Figure of speech Metaphor does not have direct comparison words, such as the words Like, Like, or Like
- Figure of Metaphor does not use connecting words or conjunctions in the sentence
Metaphorical Forms of Figures
The style of language contained in the Metaphoric Figure of speech is divided into 2 kinds of forms, the following are the explanations provided below:
Linguistic experts crowned figurative language as the "Queen" of figurative language. This is because there are many figures of speech whose formation originates from metaphorical figures of speech. Orrecchioni divides this figure of speech into two types, namely as follows:
Metaphor in Praesentia
In this figure of speech, what is to be compared is juxtaposed with the comparison, so that the meaning contained is very explicit.
Example: Anggita is the village flower in this village.
The sentence above expresses blatantly that Anggita is the most beautiful girl in the village.
Metaphor in Absentia
If the metaphor in praesetia has a very explicit meaning, it is different from the metaphor in absentia which expresses it implicitly. So, the comparison is not directly focused on the object being discussed, so it is a little confusing in understanding the meaning of the conversation.
Example: The men in the village are amazed at the intelligence of the village flower.
Types of Figure of Speech Metaphors
There are many types of metaphors and ways to use them. Here are some of them namely:
Dead Metaphor
This metaphor is one of the easiest to understand and most used, especially in love poetry. Examples: “I will die without you”, or “You light up my life”.
Absolute Metaphor
Comparing two things that have no clear connection, to make a striking point. Absolute metaphors are also known as paralogical metaphors or antimetaphors.
This is a complicated figure of speech and can be confusing to readers if they don't understand the connection you make between the two. For example, "He's doing tightrope walking with his grades this semester."
Complex Metaphor
Used to compare two or more subjects. Example: "Life is nothing more than a sorcerer's cauldron full of emeralds."
Extended metaphor
As the name implies, this is a long metaphor meant to make an in-depth comparison.
As in the classic example from Romeo and Juliet: “What light is shining through the window over there? It is moonlight, and Juliet is the sun! Arise, bright sun, and slay the envious moon, which is already sick and pale with grief.”
Implicit Metaphor
Comparing two things without using specific terms. For example, "Spending too much time with him is worse than swimming in a sea of sharks."
Also Read: Hyperbole
Mixed Metaphor
This metaphor mixes up comparisons in unison, which are either inappropriate or nonsensical. Example: "On a hot day like this, he turns into ice and enjoys the beat of his own drum."
Root metaphor
This metaphor is so familiar in everyday language, you might not even recognize it as a metaphor. Examples: “Life is a journey”, or “He broke my heart”.
8. Conceptual Metaphor
This metaphor takes one subject and describes it in different terms. Conceptual metaphors are often referred to as substitutes. Example: "I lost my youth because I lived with you."
Creative Metaphor
If you've been using dead metaphors too many times, consider creative metaphors instead. But make sure you write in terms your audience will understand.
Example: "The castle door opened, and the prince grabbed the princess' hand faster than drawing a sword from its scabbard."
