Definition of Computer Networks
The definition of a computer network itself is a network which is used to connect between several computer devices within the scope of a technology. The point is that in a computer network there is a set of computer tools which includes additional hardware (hardware). Of these various components, computer networks have the task of connecting computers to one another. Computer networks are built with the main goal of exchanging data and information.
Types of Computer Networks

Computer networks based on the breadth of coverage
- PAN (Personal Area Network)
This type of PAN network covers many smaller areas, such as offices and homes. In general, this network is widely used only for internet purposes, and also for printers. So it does not require large resources to use the PAN network.
- LAN (Local Area Network)
The LAN network itself has to connect network devices in relatively small coverage conditions. For example, as in the implementation of a LAN network which is a network system at school, office or home.
Many people tend to stick to certain connectivity, especially on token ring and ethernet. Not only that, LAN is also here providing wireless network technology that uses WIfi and is often known as WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network).
- CAN (Campus Area Network)
The CAN network which can be said to have similarities with MAN, but is more limited to the scope of campuses and academics. This network is used more for lab practice, e-mail, class updates, and so on.
- MAN (Metropolitan Area Network)
MAN itself is a network which connects one computer device to another device with the scope of the city in the same network. This type of network is larger than a LAN network.
- WAN (Wide Area Network)
WAN which is a collection of LANs that are geographically dispersed. WAN networks themselves tend to use technologies such as ATM, X.25, and also Frame Relay for even longer distance connectivity.
- Internet
The internet is the largest computer network ever created by humans. The scope for the internet itself covers almost all corners of the world. Anyone here accesses information from various sources with various computer devices, which include PCs, smartphones, laptops, tablets, TVs, and other mobile devices.
- VPN (Virtual Private Network)
VPN is one solution which is used to provide a more secure internet connection. VPN itself can create a secure path in data transmission needs. Currently, there are lots of platforms that sell VPNs for free, or some provide premium access.

There are two types of computer networks which are based on their functions, including the following:
- Client-Server, namely a computer network in which there must be a special computer device. Client computers and server computers are two computer devices that must exist in a client-server network that have different functions. Server computers are tasked with providing data resources, while client computers can only use these data resources.

- Wireless computer network (Wireless Network), is a computer network which does not use cables when exchanging data or information.
Benefits of Computer Networks
There are several benefits of computer networks, including:
- Computer networks can help someone connect with other people easily. At the same time, users can also send or receive files in various formats, such as text, images, audio, video, etc., using a computer network.
- The computer network itself allows us to make the process of sending data faster, simpler and more efficient.
- With the existence of a computer network we can also access the news and information we need very easily via the internet, where the internet itself is a network computer.
- We can also use one tool for many people in an agency or office, for example an office where many computer users can use one printer with the help of a network computer.
Negative impact
