Prayers for Study: Verses About Knowledge, Prayers Before and After Studying
Learning is a process that is carried out by everyone to get a form of change skills, changes in knowledge, changes in attitudes and positive values from various materials that have been studied. Learning is one of the obligations that must be carried out by every Muslim.
Because by learning, from those who don't know to know, from those who don't understand to understand and from those who can't become able. This learning has become Allah's command for His servants, because Allah will exalt those who are faithful and knowledgeable.
Guide to Verses About Science
The following are some guidelines for the verses of the Qur'an and hadith which mention the virtues of knowledge, including:
- Surah Al Mujaadilah verse 11
یَرۡفَعِ اللّٰہُ الَّذِیۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا مِنۡکُمۡ ۙ وَ الَّذِیۡنَ اُوۡتُوا الۡعِلۡمَ دَرَجٰتٍ ؕ وَ اللّٰہُ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُوۡنَ خَبِیۡرٌ
It means :
“Undoubtedly, Allah will raise or elevate those who believe among you and those who are given knowledge by degrees. And Allah is All-Aware of what you do.” (QS. Al Mujaadilah verse 11).
Seeking knowledge will be an obligation for all Muslims, from children to parents. So learning has no time limit for Muslims in the world.
- Surah Az Zumar verse 19
قُلْ هَلْ يَسْتَوِي الَّذِيْنَ يَعْلَمُوْنَ وَالَّذِيْنَ لَا يَعْلَمُوْنَ
"Qul hal yastawiilladziina ya'lamuuna walladziina laa ya'lamuuna".
It means:
Say, are people who know and people who don't know the same? (Qs. Az Zumar: 9)
- Surah Thaaha verse 14
وَقُلْ رَبِّ زِدْنِي عِلْمًا
"Waqurrobbi zidnii 'ilmaan".
It means:
And say (O Prophet Muhammad) add knowledge to me. (Qs. Thaaha: 114)
- Surah Ali Imran verse 18
شَهِدَ اللهُ اَنَّهُ لَا اِلَهَ اِلَّا هُوَ وَالْمَلَا ئِكَةُ وَاُولُوْ الْعِلْمِ قَائِمًا بِالْقِسْطِ اِلَا اِلَهَ اِلَّا هُوَ الْعَزِيْزُ الْحَكٍيْمُ
"Syahidallahu annahu laa ilaha illaa huwa walmalaa'ikatu wa'uuluul 'ilmi qoo'iman bilqisti ilaa illaha illaa huwal'aziizul hakiimu".
It means:
Allah mentions that there is no God (who has the right to be worshiped) but He, who upholds justice. Angels and also various people of knowledge (also mentioned such). There is no God (who has the right to be worshiped) but Him, the Most Mighty, the Most Wise. (Qs. Ali Imran: 18)
- Hadith narrated by Bukhari
Seeking knowledge is an activity that is mandatory for every human being, and regardless of gender and age.
طَلَبُ الْعِلْمِ فَرِيْضَة عَلَى كُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ وَمُسْلِمَةٍ
"Tholabul 'ilmi qoriidlotun' ala kulli muslimin wa muslimat".
It means :
Seeking knowledge is obligatory for all Muslims, male or female.
- Hadith narrated by Turmudzi (the virtue of seeking knowledge)
مَنْ خَرَجَفِى طَلَبُ الْغِلْمِ فَهُوَ فِى سَبِيْلِ اللهِ حَتَّى يَرْجِعَ
"Man khofii tholabul 'ilmi fahuwa fii sabiilillaahi hatta yarji'a".
It means:
Whoever goes out with the aim of seeking knowledge then he is in the way of Allah until he returns.
- Hadith narrated by the second Turmudzi
مَنْ اَرَا دَالدُّنْيَا فَعَلَيْهِ بِالْعِلْمِ. وَمَنْ اَرَادَالْااَخِرَةَ فَعَلَيْهِ بِلْعِلْمِ. وَمَنْ اَرَادَهُمَا فَعَلَيْهِ بِالْعِلْمِ
"Man araa daaddunyaa fa'alayhi bil'ilmi, wa man araadaal Akhirata fa'alayhi bil'ilmi, wa man araadahumaa fa'alayhi bil'ilmi".
It means:
Whoever wants worldly life, it is obligatory for him to have knowledge, as well as whoever wants it life hereafter, it is obligatory for him to have knowledge, and whoever wants both, it is obligatory for him have knowledge.
- Hadith which mentions about seeking knowledge until death:
اَطْلُبِ الْعِلْمَ مِنَ الْمَهْدِ اِلَى الَّلحْدِ
"Uthlubil 'ilma minal mahdi illallahdi".
It means:
Seek knowledge from the cradle to the grave. (Al-Hadith)
- Hadith narrated by the third Turmudzi (obligation to study for the world and the hereafter
مَنْ سَلَكَ طَرِيْقًا يَلْتَمِسُ فِيْهِ عِلْمًا شَهَّلَ اللهُ بِهِ طَرِيْقًا اِلَى الْجَنَّةِ
"Man salaka thoriiqon yaltamisu fiihi 'ilman sahhalallahu bihi thoriiqon ilaljannati".
It means:
Whoever takes the path in search of a knowledge. God will make it easier for him to go to heaven.
- Hadith narrated by Muslim
إِذَا مَاتَ ابْنُ آدَمَ انْقَطَعَ عَمَلُهُ إِلا مِنْ ثَلاثٍ: صَدَقَةٍ جَارِيَةٍ ، أَوْ عِلْمٍ يُنْتَفَعُ بِهِ ، أَوْ وَلَدٍ صَالِحٍ يَدْعُو لَهُ
It means:
"When a person dies, his deeds are cut off except for 3 things, namely almsgiving, useful knowledge and pious children." (HR. Muslim).
So the law of seeking knowledge and practicing it is obligatory, if you want to be happy in this world and in the hereafter. Because this has been guaranteed by Islam.
When going to study, a Muslim must pray so that the knowledge he gets will be blessed. Prayer before studying or studying knowledge needs to get used to it from childhood so that it gets used to it until adulthood.
Prayer Before and After Learning

Prayer Before Learning First
رَضِتُ بِااللهِ رَبَا وَبِالْاِسْلاَمِ دِيْنَا وَبِمُحَمَّدٍ نَبِيَا وَرَسُوْلاَ رَبِّ زِدْ نِيْ عِلْمًـاوَرْزُقْنِـيْ فَهْمًـا
"Rodlittu billahiroba, Wabil Islamamidiinaa, Wabimuhammadin Nabiyyaa warasuula, Robbi zidnii ilmaan warzuqnii fahmaan."
It means
"We are pleased with Allah SWT as my Lord, Islam as my religion, and the Prophet Muhammad as a Prophet and Messenger, O Allah, add to me knowledge and give me good understanding."
Prayer Before Second Study
رَبِّ زِدْنِي عِلْمًا وَارْزُقْنِيْ فَهْمًا وَاجْعَلْنِيْ مِنَ الصَّالِحِيْنَ
"Robbi zidnii 'ilman Warzuqnii fahmaa, Waj'alnii minash-shoolihiin."
It means :
"O Allah, increase my knowledge and give me the ability to understand it, and make me among the pious people."
Prayer Before Studying According to the Sunnah
اَللّٰهُمَّ اخْرِجْنَا مِنْ ظُلُمَاتِ الْوَهْمِ وَاَكْرِمْنَا بِنُوْرِالْفَهْمِ وَافْتَحْ عَلَيْنَا بِمَعْرِفَتِكَوَسَهِّلْ لَنَآ اَبْوَابَ فَضْلِكَ يَآ اَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِيْنَ
"Alloohumma Akhrijnaa Min Dzulumaatilwahmi Wa Akrimnaa binuuril Fahmi Waftah'alainaa Bima'rifatika Wasahhil Lanaa Abwaaba Fadl-lika Ya Arhamar Roohimiin."
It means :
“O Allah, free us from the darkness of prejudice, glorify us with the light of understanding, open it understanding of knowledge to us and open for us the doors of Your grace, O the Most High Caring."
Prayer After Learning First
اَللّٰهُمَّ أَرِنَا الْحَقَّ حَقًّا وَارْزُقْنَا اتِّـبَاعَهُ وَأَرِنَا الْبَاطِلَ بَاطِلاً وَارْزُقْنَا اجْتِنَابَهُ
"Allahumma Arinal Haqqa Haqqan Warzuqnat arriveda'ahu. Wa Arinal baathila Baa-Thilan Warzuqnaj tinaabahu”
It means:
O Allah, show us the truth, so that we can follow it. And show us ugliness so that we can stay away from it.
Prayer After Second Study
رَبَّنَا انْفَعْنَا بِمَاعَلَمْتَنَا الَّذِيْ يَنْفَعُنَا وَزِدْنَا عِلْمًا وَالْحَمْدُلِلّٰهِ عَلَى كُلِّ حَالٍ
"Rabbanan fa'naa bima 'alamtanaldzi yanfa'una wa zidna 'ilman walhamdulillahi 'ala kulihal".
It means:
O our Lord, make our knowledge useful knowledge, teach us about what is beneficial for us and increase our knowledge, all praise be to Allah in every condition.
Prayer After Third Study
اَللّٰهُمَّ اِنِّى اِسْتَوْدِعُكَ مَاعَلَّمْتَنِيْهِ فَارْدُدْهُ اِلَىَّ عِنْدَ حَاجَتِىْ وَلاَ تَنْسَنِيْهِ يَارَبَّ الْعَالَمِيْنَ
"Allaahumma innii istaudi'uka maa 'allamtaniihi fardud-hu ilayya'inda haajatii wa laa tansaniihi yaa robbal 'alamiin"
It means:
O Allah, in fact I have entrusted to You what You have taught me, so return it to me when I need it. Don't make me forget him. O God of nature.
