Definition of Contemporary Art
Before knowing the meaning of contemporary art, we should know the meaning of fine art. Fine art is a branch of art that makes a work of art with media that can be seen with the eye and can be felt by touch. History of Contemporary Art in Indonesia

This term in Indonesia has developed in tandem with the increasing number of techniques and mediums used for the production of a work of art, also because of this becomes a mixture of practices from different disciplines, artistic choices, and choices of work presentation that are not bound by the boundaries of space and time.
Different interpretations of contemporary art practice in Indonesia are: Eliminating the separator between various artistic tendencies, marked by the melting of the boundaries between fine arts, theatre, dance and art music. The occurrence of interventions in scientific and social disciplines, especially those that are sparked as popular knowledge or the use of renewable technologies.
This term is often thought to accompany the visual arts, music, dance and theatre. Although in western countries, the term Contemporary Art is commonly used to refer to visual arts practices according to the needs of museum activities or value-generating institutions such as art galleries and halls auction.
In Indonesian art, the term contemporary came out around the 70s. The figure who initially used the term contemporary was Gregorius Sidharta, he used this term for the title of his sculpture exhibition.
From that time, the term contemporary was often used in works of art that developed with renewal. Figures who use this contemporary term include Christo, Saptoadi Nugroho, Jim Supangkat, Dadang Christianto, FX. Harsono, Heri Dono, Eddie Hara, Tisna Sanjaya, Agus Suwage, Nindityo, Arahmaiani, Tita Rubi, Mella Jaarsma and others. These figures are members of the Indonesian New Art movement.
Characteristics of Contemporary Art
The characteristics of contemporary art are as follows:
