Complete History of Indonesian Scouts: Early History of World Scouts and Scout Jamboree
Scouting or what is known as Scouting in the international world is a movement that aims or supports young people physically, mentally and spiritual development, that they as young people may play a constructive role in society, with a focus on outdoor and survival skills life.
There are currently more than 40 million adult and young Scouts, men and women, in more than 200 countries and territories. Pramuka is an abbreviation of Praja Muda Karana, which means young people who like to work. Internationally, Scouts are known as 'Scouting' (Boy Scouts).
Early History of World Scouts
The history of the founding of scouts in the world, including Indonesia, cannot be separated from the figure of Lord Baden Powell. He was born on February 22, 1857 under the name Robert Stephenson Smyth. All the history of the founding of the scout movement began with 21 youths and a trial camp in 1907 in the form of a camp on Brownsea Island, England.
The camp was a success as evidenced by its organizer, namely Lord Baden Powell, that the method the training he uses can attract the interest of young people and is really useful for training young people the.
In January 1908 Lord Baden Powell's first book entitled "Scouting for Boys" was published. The book was an immediate success and has since sold over 100,000 copies, making it one of the best-selling books of all time.
Initially, Baden Powell's only intention was to provide a method for training boys, something that could be adopted by youth organizations. But it turns out that the theory was immediately started by young people by organizing themselves to become the forerunner of the world's scouting movement, called Boys Scouts.
In 1912, with the help of Baden Powell's younger sister, Agnes, a women's scouting organization was founded with the name Girls Guides, which was then continued by Baden Powell's wife. In 1916 a group of scouts at an alert age was founded with the name CUB which means wolf cub, which was guided by the book "The Jungle Book" by Rudyard Kipling for its activities.
In 1918 the Rover Scout was formed for scouts who were 17 years old. Then in 1920 the first World Jamboree was held at Olympia Hall, London. Invitations were given to scouts from 27 countries and it was then that Baden Powell was appointed as the Chief Scout of the World.
Then an International Council was formed, totaling 9 members and also the formation of a Secretariat Bureau in London, England. The world bureau for boy scouts has five representative offices, including in Costa Rica, Egypt, the Philippines, Switzerland and Nigeria. Meanwhile, the women's bureau has five head offices in the form of a secretariat in London, regional office bureaus from Latin America, Arab, Asia Pacific and Europe.
History of Indonesian Scouts
The history of Scouting in Indonesia began with ups and downs in organizational activities, because Indonesia was still in the colonial period. So that Indonesia is known as the three Scouting eras. Namely the Scout Movement during the Dutch Assessment Period, the Scout Movement during the Japanese Assessment Period and the Indonesian Movement after Indonesia's independence.
History of Scouting During the Dutch Colonial Period
The scouting movement was brought by the Dutch to Indonesia during the colonial period. Founded by the Dutch under the name Nederland Indische Padvinders Vereeniging or NIPV. In Indonesian it is known as the Dutch East Indies Scout Association.
Several figures considered that this organization could shape the character of the people who were still being colonized at that time. So several other organizations were also founded.
Then after the Youth Pledge, the awareness of the Indonesian people increased. Until several scouting organizations joined. In 1930 formed Pandu Pemuda Sumatra (PPS). In 1931, the Association of Indonesian Scouts was formed.
Then in 1936 it changed its name to the Indonesian Scout Brotherhood Center Agency (BPPKI). BPPKI conducted PERKINO activities (Indonesian Oemoem Scout Camp). This camp became the forerunner to the implementation of Jamboree activities until now.
History of Scouts During the Japanese Occupation
During the Japanese colonial period, the Scout movement continued to survive. However, during World War 2, the Japanese army attacked the Netherlands. So that many Indonesian scout leaders were drawn into Keibondan, PETA and Seinendan. Which is an organization formed by the Japanese that is used to support the Japanese army.
Even Japan also banned the establishment of parties and organizations of the Indonesian people. Not only that, the Japanese considered the scouting movement a dangerous organization because it could increase the spirit of unity and oneness of the Indonesian people.
However, this did not dampen the spirit of Indonesian scouting to carry out PERKINO II in Indonesia's struggle for independence to expel the Japanese army.
History of the Scouts of the Age of Independence
Not long after Indonesia's independence, namely on December 28, 1945, the Indonesian People's Scout Organization was founded in the city of Solo. This organization is designated as a scouting forum where Indonesian scout members can take shelter.
In 1961, there were around 100 scouting organizations in Indonesia which were divided into 3 organizational federations. Namely, the Indonesian Girls Scout Association, the Indonesian Scout Association and the Indonesian Boys and Girls Association.
Then on August 14, 1961 the Scout Movement was officially introduced to Indonesian society. Therefore, Scout Day is celebrated every August 14th.
With the history of Scouting that has been explained, it is hoped that we as part of Indonesia can appreciate scouting organizations everywhere. Because the organization can indeed shape the character of each person and provide experience.
Scout Jamboree
The Jamboree is a scout gathering in the form of a large camp organized by the Scout Movement Kwartir from the branch level to the national level. Even in the world, similar activities are held which are usually called the World Scout Jamboree.
Jamboree in the developing world when it was held in 1920 in England. Since then until now the World Jamboree has been held 23 times. In Indonesia it is known as the National Jamboree (Jamnas).
This term was pinned on the Indonesian scout scout meeting in the form of a large camp organized by the National Kwartir (Kwarnas). The National Jamboree is held every 5 years with participants coming from all Regencies and Cities throughout Indonesia.
Until now, the National Jamboree has been held 10 times. The following is a complete list of Jamnas that have been implemented:
